“As gold is tryed by the touch, so good
bookes by their worth” – Wit’s Academy,1635.
” Comme l’or est expertisé par
son contact, de même les bons livres le sont par leur
valeur “. Wit’s Academy,1635.
This book is intended
as a guide to publications containing records of the testing, or
proving the effects of drugs and poisons upon the healthy human
body. The name of each medicinal substance is
first given, followed by the most important of its synonyms and
popular names. It has been thought best not to include the
German or French names of the remedies.Titles of books containing pathogeneses
follow, and afterwards references to original provings, with the
names of the provers, alphabetically arranged. This index includes the provings from the
first publication byHahnemann
of the Fragmenta de viribus in 1805
up to January 1,
1900.Reference has in some cases been made to
experiments upon animals, and also to certain drug results that
cannot be strictly classified as pure homoeopathic provings. It has simply been the aim to direct the
student of Materia Medics to all important drug data. All the homoeopathic journals, obtainable,
have been carefully examined, and comparisons have been made with
the references inAllen’s
Encyclopaedia, the Cyclopdia of Drug Pathogenesy, the Guiding
Symptoms, and some references have been added from these
authorities. There is a vast fund in these three great
collections to the careful student, and each one has its own
especial value.Thus
Allen
includes poisoning cases in connection with the symptomatology ;
the Cyclopaedia of Drug Pathogenesy records the provings in most
cases verbatim from the note books or the first publication of the
proving ; while in the Guiding Symptoms may be found a vast
accumulation of clinical references and results. So that each set of books covers a distinct
field of research, and each should be in the library of the
thorough student. In the first accumulation by
Jahr,
the Symptomen Codex, tables may be found of duration of action,
names, etc., of the remedies. The names of the remedies have been obtained
from the American Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia, the British
Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia, and from Dr. H. M.Smith’s
List of Homoeopathic Medicines, and from the Standard Botanies. The drug name used and recorded by the
prover is first given ; the synonyms follow.Part III is a Bibliography.

Of Journals that it has been impossible to obtain. There is also a list of books and pamphlets
to which reference is made in the Index. The numbering the volumes is in all cases
continuous from the initial volurne, and not by the pernicious and
senseless system of series by which one set of a journal may have
several volumes, each numbered volume one.The compiler is under great obligations to
Dr. RichardHaehl,
of Stuttgart, Germany, who very carefully examined sets of the
Allgemeine homoopathische Zeitung, and several other of the German
journals. In this age of fantastic pharmaceutical
compounds, let us not forget that the cure is made easier and more
complete by the selection of the similimum according to the
directions laid down by Hahnetnann, than by floundering about with
empirical doses of chemical extracts given according to eclectic
fancy and not by the certain law our school possesses, the Law
Similia.Dr Thomas Lindsley BRADFORD.
