Mania
cured by a Key-Note of Calc-c.
By Dr.
Bruns.
Presented by
Dr. Sayeed Ahmad D. I. Hom. (London)

Dr. G. H. E. Jahr, in his Forty Years’ Practice,
p.41, says : “Nothing, probably, is still involved in greater
obscurity than the external causes to which mental and psychical
derangements owe their existence.” When a few months ago, I was
reading this deep and important sentence of our learned and now deceased
friend, Jahr, my thoughts were directed to the powers and elements
causing sickness and death. A case of mania, cured by me some twenty
years ago, when I was a student with Dr. A. Lutze, in Coethen, came into
my mind, and I thought then, and think so now that it might be
profitable to some one to relate the story. (2736) One day the Dr. said,
“Bruns, you must take under your special care a patient to whom I
have given Bell., Stram., and Hyosc. without the least benefit though
these remedies are strongly indicated.” I found the patient resting
on the lounge, and I seated myself and observed him, a young man, with
sandy complexion, and sound constitution as it seemed to me. It happened
that his mother had left him for a while alone. He kept calm resting for
about twenty-five minutes, when at once his eyes were fixed on something
coming sideways near to thim. The nearer it came the more restless he
grew. He raised his body with the left arm, and took with his right a
handkerchief, and struck rapidly and violently at the imaginary objects.
After a few moment’s fight, he fell back exhausted on the lounge. Not
a motion, not a sound was made by me until he was perfectly calm again.
My first question was “Have you seen them before ?
“Yes !” was his answer. “Could you tell me when you
saw them the first time ?” “What day is it ?”
was his counter-question. I told him it was Saturday.
“Saturday !” he repeated in a doubtful tone.
“Well,” he continued, “You know I am a potter, and Monday
morning it was very cold, so cold that day I was treading, (the clay)
with my bare feet, they were covered with a frozen crust. I had been in
the mixture about half-an-hour, when I was them come around me in large
numbers, and have seen them ever since from time to time.” I was
curious to know what he had seen, and I asked him how they looked ?
“Well, they look like common curs.” I gave him Calc-c.30, and
his head was clear in one day. I told the jovial Dr. Lutz that he must
go and see the patient himself, for he was getting better. He shook his
head and went, but came back in a very short time. He was so agitated,
and spread his arms out for me, that, I, for a moment, feared he also
had turned crazy. His large, blue, and beautiful eye, glared at me, and
he gasped for some time, until his clear and powerful voice roared out
in a somewhat commanding manner – “What did you give
him ?” I gave him what you taught me to give in ailments
caused by taking cold in the water.” “Ha !
Ha !” he cried, “you gave him Calc-c”.

The patient was permanently cured from his
mania, caused by congestion, by a single dose of Calcarea Carbonia 30.
