EARS, DISEASES OF.

Q. : Give the ear symptoms of Belladonna.

A. :

Severe boring
pains in the ears, which come on suddenly and shoot from one ear into the
other.

Q. : What are the ear symptoms of Causticum ?

A. :

Words, sounds
and the patient’s own voice re-echo in the ears ; roaring and rushing
noises in the ears.

Q. : Give five indications for Ferrum phosphoricum in ear troubles.

A. :

1. Diffused
inflammatory processes.

2. Dark beefy redness of parts.

3. Muco-purulent discharge with tendency to hemorrhage.

4. The complete establishment of the discharge is not followed by
relief of pain.

5. The paroxysmal character of the pain.

Q. : Give the ear symptoms of Kalium muriaticum.

A. :

Deafness from
swelling of the Eustachian tubes ; proliferous catarrhal inflammation of
the middle ear with thickening of the membrane ; there is a stuffy
sensation and obstruction of the naso-pharynx with snapping noises in the
ear ; also in deafness from swelling of the external ear.

Q. : Give some characteristic ear symptoms of Lachesis.

A. :

Roaring and
singing in the ears, which is relieved by putting the finger in the ear
and shaking it.

Ears full of pasty, offensive wax.

Q. : What are the ear symptoms of Phosphorus ?

A. :

Hardness of
hearing and a re-echoing of sounds in the ears.

Q. : What are the ear symptoms of Psorinum ?

A. :

Otorrhea, with
a horribly offensive odor, like that of rotten meat.

Q. : What are the symptoms calling for Pulsatilla in earache ?

A. :

Sharp, tearing
and pulsating pains, which are worse at night ; earache in children.

Q. : When should Chamomilla be given instead ?

A. :

In nervous
children who cannot tolerate pain, and where one cheek is red and the

EPILEPSY.

Q. : What is the chief sphere of action of Cicuta virosa ?

A. :

In spasms, with
rigidity, fixed, staring eyes, blue face and frothing at the mouth ; there
is great difficulty in breathing, opisthotonos and loss of consciousness,
and these spasms are followed by profound exhaustion.

Q. : What are the indications for Cuprum in spasms ?

A. :

When from
suppressed eruptions ; violent delirium, there is blueness of the face and
lips, the eyeballs are distorted, and there is frothing at the mouth, and
they may be ushered in by a shriek or cry.

Convulsions following cholera.

Q. : Give the principal Homoeopathic indications for Hydrocyanicum
acidum.

A. :

In convulsions
simulating epilepsy, tetanus with stiffness about the jaws and neck ;
another symptom indicating its use is a gurgling, which extends from the
throat to the stomach when swallowing.

Q. : What are the convulsive symptoms of Hyoscyamus ?

A. :

Epileptic
spasms with jerking, twitching and frothing at the mouth, followed by
sleep ; patient bites his tongue ; patient looks wild.

Q. : What do we use Oenanthe crocata for ?

A. :

It has been
used with success in epilepsy and paralytic conditions ; convulsions with
death-like syncope.

Q. : What is the characteristic of Silicea in epilepsy ?

A. :

Epilepsy which
occurs at night, the aura beginning in the solar plexus ; arising from
overstrain of the mind and from emotion.

Q. : What are the symptoms of Artemisia in epilepsy ?

A. :

In cases which
have arisen from fright.

Q. : If epilepsy is caused by indigestion, the aura starting in the
epigastrium and spreading upward, what is the remedy ?

A. :

Nux vomica.

A. :

A. :

Epilepsy from
fright or coming on during menstruation ; pupils are dilated for days or
hours before attack ; after attack restlessness and trembling of hands.

Q. : When is Cicuta virosa the remedy ?

A. :

When the
patient is taken with rigidity, fixed, staring eyes, blue face, frothing
at mouth ; shocks or series of shocks pass through body ; jaws locked ;
followed by pro-found exhaustion.

ERYSIPELAS.

Q. : Give the symptoms of Apis in erysipelas.

A. :

It is of a
rosy, pinkish hue, later livid and purple, the parts become quickly
oedematous, and there is a bruised, sore feeling to the skin.

Q. : What is the erysipelas of Belladonna ?

A. :

Bright red,
rapid swelling of the skin, the skin is smooth, shining and tense ; the
pains are sharp, lancinating, stinging and throbbing.

Q. : How does Lachesis compare here ?

A. :

The face is
purplish instead of red, and the patient is drowsy and weaker.

Q. : What are the indications for Cantharis in facial erysipelas.

A. :

Erysipelas
beginning on the dorsum of the nose and spreading to the right cheek with
the formation of large vesicles, which break and discharge an excoriating
fluid.

Q. : Give indications for Euphorbium officinalis in erysipelas.

A. :

In the
vesicular form, where there are large, yellow vesicles and violent fever ;
pains extend from gums into ear.

Q. : Give the indications for Lachesis in facial erysipelas.

A. :

More on the
left side, at first bright red then dark bluish or purplish, great
infiltration of cellular tissues and great weakness ; patient drowsy and
perhaps has delirium and is loquacious.

Q. : What variety of erysipelas does Rhus correspond to ?

A. :

The vesicular
variety, where the skin looks dark and is covered with vesicles.

Q. : When is Stramonium indicated in erysipelas ?

A. :

When there are
brain complications, such as violent delirium, screaming out, terrified.

EYE, DISEASES OF.

Q. : What are the characteristic eye symptoms of Apis ?

A. :

Asthenopia and
chemosis, a puffiness of the conjunctiva showing oedema.

Œdematous swelling of the lids and especially below the eyes.

Q. : How does Apis compare with Rhus in eye affections ?

A. :

There is less
tendency to formation of pus with Apis
than with Rhus.

Rhus

is relieved
by warmth and Apis by
cold.

Q. : What are the eye symptoms of Argentum nitricum ?

A. :

Violent,
purulent ophthalmia, with thick, yellow, bland discharge ; the
characteristic is the profuseness of the discharge.

Q. : Give the eye symptoms of Aurum.

A. :

Syphilitic
iritis after the abuse of Mercury
;
ulceration of the
cornea and intense photophobia ; double vision and half vision, in which
the lower half of objects can be seen.

Q. : What are the eye symptoms of Belladonna ?

A. :

Sudden pains
and violent symptoms, eyes feel swollen and protruding, conjunctiva red
and pupils very much dilated, eyes feel as if full of sand, desire to rub
the eyes which relieves.

Great photophobia.

Q. : Give the eye symptoms of Causticum.

A. :

There is
paralysis of the eyelids ; there is heat, burning and feeling of sand in
the eyes, muscular weakness and double vision.

Q. : What peculiar eye symptom has Cantharis ?

A. :

Objects look
yellow.

Q. : What are the eye symptoms of Cinnabaris ?

A. :

A pain in the
eye, which starts from one canthus and goes around the brow of the eye to
the other canthus, a ciliary neuralgia.

Q. : What drug has a pain in the right eye as if it were pushed out of
the head, worse near a warm stove ?

A. :

Comocladia
dentata.

Q. : Give eye symptoms of Euphrasia.

A. :

Blepharitis,
injected eyes, discharge thick and excoriating, the tears scald and
irritate the cheeks, photophobia worse in artificial light.

Traumatic conjunctivitis.

Paralysis of the third nerve.

Q. : How is Allium cepa distinguished ?

A. :

The discharge
from the eye in Euphrasia
is excoriating and
that from the nose is bland, while the opposite is found in Allium
cepa,
nose
excoriating and eyes bland.

Q. : Give the eye symptoms of Ferrum phosphoricum.

A. :

Eyes inflamed,
red, with a sensation as if grains of sand were under the lids ; pain on
moving the eyes ; photo-phobia worse from artificial lights.

Q. : How does Gelsemium dilate the pupils ?

A. :

By paralyzing
the third nerve, which supplies the circular fibres of the iris ; there
being no longer any resistance to the action of the radiating fibres, the
pupil dilates.

Q. : How does Belladonna dilate the pupil ?

A. :

By stimulating
the sympathetic, which supplies the radiating fibres of the iris, so that
they overcome the action of the circular fibres.

Q. : When will Physostigma contract the pupils ?

A. :

As this drug
contracts the pupil by stimulating the third nerve, it will only contract
the pupil dilated by the action of Belladonna,
and not that
dilated by the action of Gelsemium.

Q. : What are some other eye symptoms of Gelsemium ?

A. :

It causes
paralytic symptoms, such as diplopia or double vision from paresis of the
eye muscles.

Ptosis and strabismus ; all from its action on the third nerve.

Q. : What are the eye symptoms of Graphites ?

A. :

There is
inflammation about the lids, which is especially worse about the canthi.

There is a tendency for the edges of the lids to crack and bleed, styes
appear, the lashes turn in, and there is a discharge from the eyes, which
excoriates, and there are often vesicles on the cornea.

Q. : What are the eye symptoms of Hepar sulphur ?

A. :

Purulent
affections about the eyes, hypopyon, etc. ; worse from cold air or cold
applications.

Q. : In what affection of the eye is Kalium bichromicum the remedy ?

A. :

Ulcers of the
cornea, with tendency to deep perforation ; look as if punched out.

Q. : What are the characteristic eye symptoms of Kalium muriaticum ?

A. :

Parenchymatous
keratitis and ulcerations of a low type where the redness of the
conjunctiva is not excessive ; photophobia, pain and lachrymation are
moderate or absent, the base of the ulcer is dirty yellow, and the
discharge is white mucus, and it tends to spread from the periphery.

Q. : Give the eye symptoms of Kalium sulphuricum.

A. :

In ophthalmias
where there is a profuse discharge of pus ; ophthalmia neonatorum, crusts
on the eyelids.

Q. : Give three characteristic symptoms of Mercurius in the eyes.

A. :

1.
Muco-purulent discharges, which cause soreness of the lids and ulceration.

. Sensitiveness and
soreness of eyes to touch, with burning.

3

. Intolerance of
eyes to firelight, with dimness of vision.

Q. : Give the eye symptoms of Mercurius corrosivus.

A. :

Burning pains ;
intense photophobia and excoriating lachrymation, making the cheeks sore,
almost taking the skin off ; tearing in the bones around the eye ;
ulceration of cornea with tendency to perforation ; it is almost specific
for syphilitic iritis.

Q. : What are the characteristic eye symptoms of Natrum muriaticum ?

A. :

It is a remedy
especially characteristic in muscular asthenopia and in ciliary neuralgia,
which comes and goes with the sun.

Also in blepharitis.

There is lachrymation and scalding, and letters run together when
reading.

Q. : What are the eye symptoms of Paris quadrifolia ?

A. :

Sensation as if
the eyes were drawn back into the head by strings.

Q. : What two conditions about the eye is Phosphorus useful in ?

A. :

1.
Cataract, the letters appear red ; early in the disease.

2

. Degeneration, or
gray atrophy of the optic nerve from overwrought nervous system ; objects
have a cloudiness about them by candle light ; green halo about objects.

Q. : What is the remedy for atrophy of the optic nerve from tobacco ?

A. :

Arsenicum.

Q. : Give eye symptoms of Rhus toxicodendron.

A. :

Conjunctivitis
and iritis, when of traumatic or rheumatic origin, with severe pains worse
at night ; scrofulous ophthalmia and orbital cellulitis ; ptosis and
stiffness of the lids in rheumatic subjects.

Oedematous swelling and acrid discharge.

Q. : What other drugs have this stiffness of the lids ?

A. :

Causticum,
Gelsemium
and Kalmia.

Q. : What are the chief eye symptoms of Staphisagria which have been
verified clinically ?

A. :

Itching of
margin of lids, styes, nodosities, chalazae on lids, one after another,
sometimes ulcerating.

Q. : Give some other drugs useful in styes.

A. :

Pulsatilla,
Lycopodium
and Hepar
sulphur.

Q. : What eye affections indicate Silicea ?

A. :

Styes or
pustular affections about the eyes.

Q. : In what affections about the eye is Spigelia useful ?

A. :

Ciliary
neuralgia, pains radiate, cold feeling in the eye.

Q. : What other drug has cold feeling in the eye ?

A. :

Thuja.

Q. : What are the eye indications for Pulsatilla ?

A. :

Conjunctivitis
; discharge thick, yellow and bland ; ophthalmia after measles ;
ophthalmia neonatorum.

Q. : When would Zincum be indicated ?

A. :

Opacities of
cornea ; pterygium ; granular lids ; amblyopia accompanied by headache
with pain at root of nose ; pains worse at inner canthus.

Q. : When is Ruta indicated in eye troubles ?

A. :

When there is
irritability of every tissue of the eye from overwork, such as using eyes
on too fine work.

Asthenopia, burning in the eyeballs and over the eyes, blurring of
vision, letters seem to run together.

Q. : Give two remedies similar.

A. :

Belladonna and
Ammoniac gum.

Q. : When is Aconite indicated in conjunctivitis ?

A. :

When resulting
from a foreign body in the eye, or from exposure to dry, cold winds, there
is heat, burning and a feeling of sand in the eyes.

Much photophobia and violent aching in eyeballs, also in glaucoma.

Q. : When Aconite fails in conjunctivitis resulting from a foreign body
what is the remedy ?

A. :

Sulphur.

Q. : Give the eye symptoms of Arsenicum.

A. :

Burning in the
eyes like fire ; phlyctenulae on cornea ; excoriating discharge from eye.

Q. : Give indications for Asa foetida in iritis.

A. :

Syphilitic
iritis, burning throbbing pains, soreness of bones around the eyes, relief
from pressure on eye balls.

Q. : Give indications for Bryonia in glaucoma.

A. :

Tension of
eyeballs increased ; hot tears flow from eye ; photophobia and dimness of
vision.

Q. : Give indications for Calcarea carbonica ?

A. :

Corneal
opacities, scrofulous ophthalmia, pustules and ulcers on cornea, with
general Calcarea symptoms.

Q. : Give symptoms calling for Kalium hydriodicum in syphilitic iritis.

A. :

After abuse of Mercury,
when the symptoms
are violent.

Q. : Give eye symptoms of Lachesis.

A. :

Dimness of
vision, dim sight, evidence of heart disease and vertigo ; retinal
apoplexy.
