In the fall of 1899, I was called to a
lady, married 35 years of age, mother of three children.
She was quite emaciated, with a yellowish cachetic look of the face. A
couple of years before, I treated her when she had an attack of vomiting,
in which she vomited coffee-ground substances.
She was relieved at that time by Ars alb 40m but had more or less
trouble with her digestion upto this time. This last attack was more
persistent and did not yield to Ars and some other remedies.
After awhile it appeared that the sever pain and vomiting came on when
the stomach was empty.
She had to eat once or twice in the night for
relief. The substance vomited was always black or brown looking like
coffee grounds.
Her sister had been operated for cancer of the breast, and of course she
was very nervous and fearful of cancer of the stomach. The peculiar
symptom of vomiting while stomach is empty, led me to Anacardium,
which relieved promptly, and she has had no return of the symptoms
since then.

A bad case of tonsilitis, the swelling
began on one side, the next day was even worse on the other side.
So I told them, that as the first side was better I thought the last one
would be better tomorrow; but alas, the next day number one was worse
again, the patient could not swallow, food and drinks came back by the
nose.
It was with much difficulty, choking and struggling that even a spoonful
of medicine could be taken.
I hesitated no longer, but gave Lac-caninum cm,
at noon, and when I visited her in the evening, found her taking oyster
broth and she could speak distinctly, wheras she could not articulate a
single word in the morning.

I was called to treat a child five years of
age suffering from birth with a most obstinate form of constipation.
He had to be forced and held to the stool crying and screaming all the
while, being totally unable to pass any stools even after an enema.
After trying several remedies in vain, I asked the mother to turn the
child over(he was in bed) to let me examine the anus and rectum. As she
turned down the bed clothes to do so, a large chunk of solid faeces
appeared in the bed.
“There”, she said, “that is the way it is. Notwithstanding
his inability to pass stool, when he tries, we often find these things in
the bed, and he does not know when they pass, nor do we”.
I then gave a few doses of Aloe 200 and
cured the whole trouble quickly and permanently.

A seventy year old man, was attacked with a
severe pain in the abdomen.
Finally, a large hard swelling developed in the ileo-caecal region very
sensitive to contact or to the least motion.
It began to assume a bluish colour, and on account of his age and extreme
weakness, it was thought he must die.
Having studied the case, it was found in Raue’s pathology the indications
for Plumbum as the remedy.
It was administered in the 200th potency, which was followed by relief and
perfect recovery.

A child three years of age, had eczema
capitis. Under allopathic treatment, the eczema disappeared; but soon
entero-colitis of a very obstinate character set in.
Child greatly emaciated, little or no appetite, very restless, and stools
brown fluid mixed with undigested substances, and of an intolerably foetid
nature.
Taking into account the suppressed eczema, I prescribed Graphites
6m
and in a short time a perfect cure was the result.

I once treated a case of what seemed to be
locomotor ataxia.
The patient has been slowly using the use of his legs; could not stand in
the dark; and when he walked along the street, he would make his wife walk
either ahead of him, or behind him, for the acts of looking sidewise at
her or in the least turning head or eyes that way would cause him to
stagger of fall.
Conium cured him. It would always
aggravate at first, but he would greatly improve after stopping the
remedy.
Taking an occasional dose from a week to four weeks apart completely cured
him in about an year.
I was a bad case of a year’s standing before I took him.

A young lady about 20 years of age
complained, a week before I was called, of weakness, or feeling of general
prostration; headache and loss of appetite, but the greatest complaint was
of prostration.
She was a student, and her mother who was an excellent nurse, attributed
all her sickness to overwork at school, and tried to rest and nurse her
up.
But she continued to grow worse.
I prescribed for her Gelsemium and followed it with Bryonia
according to her indications, and she ran through a mild course of two
weeks longer and seemed quite satisfactory.
Being left alone in a room, she threw off her clothes, caught cold and
relapsed. A low form of delirium developed.
staring eyes rolled upwards into the head, head retracted, complete
unconsciousness, lying on back and sliding down in bed, twitching, or
rather intense, violent trembling, all over, so that she shook the
bed.
Zincum metallicum improved her in one
hour.
She got no more medicine for four days and improved steadily.

(Nash)

A young man of good habits was taken with
nausea and vomiting.
He was drowsy and after a couple of days he began to grow very jaundiced
all over.
The sclerotica were as yellow as gold, as indeed was the skin all over the
body, even to the nails. The stools were perfectly colourless, while the
urine was as brown as lager beer.
When you could see through it, on the edge of the receptacle, it was
yellow as fresh bile.
The pulse was only thirty beats per minute, and often dropped out of beat.
This was a perfect Digitalis case of
jaundice, and this remedy cured him in a few days.

Miss Anna Tanner, age 20, got creeping
chilliness or shivering in the evening, rapid swelling of the tonsils with
pains shooting up into the parotid and ears ; great redness of the parts
(tonsils and uvula) ; difficult swallowing ; drinks escape by the nose ;
horribly offensive odour of the breath ; flabby tongue, showing imprint of
the teeth ; high fever and thirst ; perspiration profuse but affords no
relief. Seems as though the tonsils must suppurate. Here is a typical case
of tonsillitis.
Mercuricus vivus (Fincke) CM in
solution was followed with rapid and complete subsidence of all these
symptoms and rapid recovery without suppuration. I have cured many such
cases with the same potency of the remedy. (So have others).

A patient consulted me  about a
painful, permanent feeling of cramplike contraction of the anus, from which
he had suffered for 20 years and which was quite inexplicable because
there were no haemorrhoids nor any other anomaly to account for the
problem. Careful investigation brought out the fact that the pain, which
was in evidence night and day, was relieved only while the patient was
eating. I prescribed for him Anacardium in
the 30th potency, followed later by the same remedy in the 200th potency,
and the cure was rapid.

On a certain fishing holiday in
Derbyshire, I once met a young married couple, at the Inn where we were
staying, who were just finishing up their eighteen months wedding tour
around the world. I noticed at once, as we sat together at breakfast, that
the bride’s face was covered with a rash and red pimples, and on enquiry
of the bridegroom found that before starting on their tour, the parents of
the bride had insisted that their daughter should be first inoculated as a
prophylactic against enteric fever. The rash and pimples were all over the
body and lasted the entire tour to the great torment of this beautiful
young woman !
Gunpowder 3x, two tablets every four
hours or three times a day cured in ten days and before she left ‘her skin
became as that of a little child’. Eight years elapsed and I heard from
the bride that the cure holds good.

Eighteen months ago, I had to go
to the Motor Engineer of a town in Suffolk – a friend of mine. His face
was very sad…. ‘Hullo, old chap, what’s up ?’. ‘Oh, my poor dear old
mother! She has had a gathered corn which continually discharges and the
doctors cannot stop it, and the poison has gone all up her leg, and the
doctors say, “She must have it off!”. And just think of it, she
is 81 years and I am certain that if she has her leg taken off, it will
kill her !’.
My answer was ‘Cheer up,old man, the leg will not come off ! I will
guarantee to cure your mother in three weeks !’
Left some tablets of Gunpowder 3x with
instructions – two tablets three times a day and one dose of Silica 30 for
each of the two weeks. Third week one dose of Hepar Sulph 100. At the end
of the three weeks I drive over twenty-five miles. My friend’s beaming
face tells its own tale ! ‘How is the mother ?’ ‘Thank God, and thank you
! Mother has gone out for a walk with my wife. She is perfectly well !’.

A few years ago, whilst driving
from house to house to visit my patients, I was detained at one place
longer than usual, when my coachman sent in to tell me that one of the
horses was suddenly taken ill. On going out to see what was the matter,
the mare was lying flat on her belly, and suffering from a severe attack
of colic. She was of a mild and gentle disposition, refused water, and was
covered with cold sweat, although it was a warm summer day. From the fact
of her lying so flat upon the abdomen, I interpreted relief from pressure,
mild and gentle disposition, refused water, cold sweat all over, female
sex.
Pulsatilla 200 was then and there
given upon her tongue, and in less than half an hour she rose, shook
herself, and there was no more trouble, although I drove her to the
stable, and did not take her out till the next morning.

A.H at 8 years of age was on the
point of being sent to a mental deficiency school. He was a sulky little
chap. At school he could not ‘count’, read, write, recite or sing. After
two months of Baryta Carbonica the
headmaster reports a wonderful improvement. The boy is now bright, happy,
plays with other boys,etc.
I gave Baryta Carbonica 6, three times a day in this case.
In this case, the boy was just saved from going to a mental deficiency
school. In fact it had all been arranged when Baryta carbonica was given
in time to save the boy. I wrote to the Surrey County Council doctor and
he was quite pleased with my report.
What a pity we cannot get in touch with the Mental deficiency schools. I
am sure half the inmates could be cured by homeopathy.

Adele W., 10, tall slender, pale,
hollow-chested, delicate, was out walking one clear day in March 1881, and
on returning home suddenly complained of being sick. Her symptoms were :
raging headache, severe chill followed by intense heat, intolerance of
light, very nervous, nausea, vomitting first food then bile. The following
night very restless, dozed a little but on awaking always had headache, at
times slightly delirious.
Next morning, she was very feverish, high temperature, raging headache,
loud singing noise in the ears, convulsive twitching of the muscles of the
face, especially about mouth and cheeks, very sensitive to touch and
irritated by the least noise.
Bellad 3x was given every hour. Next
day no change. The day after, March 4th, much better. Bellad was continued
and hydrogeneous diet ordered. On March 7th she was fully taken with
severe chills which lasted fully three days. It was now clear that it was
a question of intermittent fever. Atrop sulph 6x
and Nat sul 2x of each three drops
was given on wafers, the body to be rubbed with spirits, and water only to
be drunk mixed with wine. On March 14th she had another paroxysm in a
light form and on the 21st still lighter. From that time she began to
recover her health and appetite and grew stout.
In March 1882, one night she went to bed well and woke up a few hours
screaming with pain in right ear, cheeks flushed, more on right side,
Atrop 6x. Next two days she was free from pain but on the fourth day she
had another attack but less severe. Atrop 6x and Nat sul 2x every hour.
There were four more attacks, all quartan and each time shorter and
lighter. She was last seen in the winter of 1884 when she was well and had
been so since the last attack.

The patient, a woman of 65 years
age, complained of a pain which began as a soreness in the epigastrium and
right hypochondrium, increasing to a sore pain. The pain was > while
sitting, > belching; < lying on the back, markedly < lying on the
right side; < on motion, especially on turning over in bed. There was a
constant sensation of pulling in the right hypochondrium, < lying on
the right side. The pain causes sweating. There is pain as of repeated
blows in the region of the right scapula. The mouth is exceedingly dry.
There is a great aversion to food or drink, and the odor of food, or any
other strong odors are very offensive and cause nausea. The patient vomits
as soon as water becomes warm in the stomach; there is no thirst. Although
there is much flatus, none passes. The urine has an offensive odour.
Analysis the case using Allen’s “Boenninghausen’s Therapeutic
Handbook”, the following is observed :
Location :
Epigastrium
Hypochondrium
Sensation :
Pulling
Hammering
Sore pain, internally
Conditions of aggravations and ameliorations :
< Lying on back
< Lying on right side
< Motion of affected part
< Turning over in bed
< Strong odours
> Sitting
> Belching
Concomitants :
Sweat, with associated symptoms
Thirstless
Mouth, in general
Dryness internally (of parts usually moist)
Incarcerated flatus
Urine, offensive

Since Boenninghausen has no rubric covering the concomitant symptom vomiting
as soon as water becomes warm in the stomach,
this was reserved for
reference to the Materia Medica.
The following was the result of the repertorisation :-  Sulph
18/71 ; Phos 18/68 ; Nux vom 16/71 ; Puls 16/63 ; Bry
15/58 Acon 15/57.
In spite of the considerable difference in numerical totality between
Sulph and Phos, it was a simple matter to differentiate between the
simillimum and the similar. Phosphorous 1M was
administered, the patient became comfortable. Improvement continued and
the whole condition cleared completely within a few days.

A young woman, 35 years of age,
was brought in by her family physician who felt he needed help on the
case. She was greatly depressed, cried a great deal, and felt so unlike
herself that “she felt frightened at herself”. She has “a
mad desire to talk”, although she is averse to any work – mental or
physical. She faces the day with dread; feels as if alone in the world;
music of which she has been very fond, is now extremely distasteful. She
admits there is no reason why she should not be happy and content, since
she has pulled through some hard times and now the road has been smoothed
out. She has not slept for several days. Previously, she would awaken from
sleep with a general quivering, especially in the pit of the stomach. She
feels weak in the knees and has an all-gone sensation which is better
after 4pm. She has developed an aversion to being with people, especially
crowds. There is a great deal of headache, dull pain that comes and goes
across the forehead < in the morning; it becomes throbbing on stooping.
There is a ringing in the left ear and sense of pressure in the ears as if
they were stopped. Her tonsils are enlarged. She is eating poorly and has
recently lost 15 pounds. She sweats all over. Her feet blister, and sweat.
The nails are brittle.
The following rubrics were used (Boenninghausen) :-

Disposition, generally affected
Sadness
Desire for motion
Epigastrium
Trembling, internally
Waking, in distress
Sleeplessness
Nervous weakness
Sensation of emptiness
< music
Pain, dull
Forehead
Sweat, easy
Sweat, special parts
Stopped sensation, in ears
Ringing, in ears
Throbbing, internally
< stooping
Emaciation
< morning
Eruptions, blisters
Feet
Nails, brittle
Tonsils

Of the 24 rubrics used the following remedies ranked :-
Sepia 23/92 (lacks Tonsils) ; Puls 22/90 (lacks Tonsils,
nails brittle) ; Merc 22/86 (lacks waking in distress, < music)
; Calc carb 22/84 (lacks waking in distress,tonsils) ; Sul 21/91
; Bry 21/86 ; Lyc 21/76.
Reference to the Materia Medica showed that Sepia
reflected the likeness of the patient and the remedy was
administered. There was a decided aggravation, but it was necessary to
repeat the potency, which held the patient in a satisfactory manner

I remember, years ago, a case of a
small boy of about eight, hauled in by his waist-belt by an old woman to
subside on the floor in the middle of the room, a shapeless heap,
slobbering and passing urine. He was a most repulsive object, offensive to
eye and nostril. He could not feed himself. He could scarcely swallow,
when fed. He could not speak. He could not maintain the upright position
for a moment, much less walk, without the support of that terrible belt,by
which he was hauled up and dragged along. His one talent was screaming,
and he did not hide that talent in a napkin….. he SCREAMED. He nearly
drove his people and all the neighbours mad.
A few drops of Sulphur in the course
of a few months made a happy, smiling child of this monstrosity . Screams
ceased. He improved all round. The belt was discarded. He appeared to be
proud of his progress in the way of locomotion.

Miss ___ consulted me because of a
tumour in her right mamma which had been steadily growing for about a year
or more. It was now the size of a hen’s egg, and as hard as ivory,
evidently fibroid, and embedded in the gland, the skin and the nipple
being in no way implicated. The case was severely handicapped by the fact
that the patient received a letter stating that an only brother had died
in a hospital from what was said to be cancer of the stomach. More than
one surgeon had been consulted, and as a matter of course, they advised
excision of the growth.
Treatment — As all her symptoms pointed to Sulphur,
I at once gave her Sulphur 100,000th potency after her menstrual period,
and after the next one she got Sulphur 200,000th,and after the next, she
got the 300,000th. With every dose there was a decided dimunition of the
tumour and about a month after the third dose, on examining both breasts,
it was impossible to detect any difference, the tumours having been
entirely absorbed, leaving no trace of its existence. It has been more
than three years since, and there has been no return.

An allopathic doctor has been
treated for weeks by his colleagues for a severe crural neuralgia. It was
so severe that he had been in bed for many weeks . He had been given
morphia and all sorts of sedatives, but like the woman in the scriptures,
was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse.
His wife decided to try a change of treatment for him. I was called and
did not receive a very gracious reception. He told me that he did not send
for me. I said I had received a message to come or would not have been
there. After a little discussion, I was most graciously allowed to examine
him. I could find nothing to cause the intense pain in the crural nerve,
so decided it was pure neuralgia. I therefore prescribed acidum
oxalicum, 6th potency
, 3 drops three times a day, and told him
he would soon be better. How dare I tell him so confidently when he had
been treated so many weeks without relief ?
Because oxalic acid can cause this unbearable pain, so I knew it was
homeopathic to the condition. Did the medicine cure him ? Yes, in a few
days, he was perfectly free from pain and was up and about again !

Kn, 13 years old, was burnt by a
gunpowder explosion. His clothes and face were severely burnt. His
eyelids, eyebrows and head hair had been burned off and both eyeballs had
been so severely injured that he could not see. I was called a few minutes
after the accident. I gave orders that the whole face should be covered
with a piece of linen soaked in the tincture of Cantharides
3rd dilution, leaving only the nostrils open for breathing. The first
application produced severe pain which disappeared after two minutes. The
application was renewed and after 13 hours the whole face was painless,
while the other parts of the body, not treated in the same way were full
of blisters and vesicles.

I was called to see a novice in a
convent in Ghent, who suffered from inability to control her bowels and
bladder, accompanied by a permanent headache and confusion. Her troubles
had steadily increased. Her excretions were passed to her utter disgust
without here noticing it. On the 9th of February, I prescribed Aloes
30th potency, 5 globules a day. I saw the patient again on the 19th.
Considerable improvement had taken place and control of bowel and bladder
had been re-established. On the 23rd a fortnight after the beginning of
the treatment, the young lady was normal, and I ceased visiting her on the
2nd of March.

A homeopathic physician in Albany,
N. Y, was called in consultation on a so-called case of pthisis pulmonaris
(consumption). The case was in allopathic hands. After carefully examining
the case, he was asked : “What is your diagnosis doctor ?’ ,’Stannum‘,
said the doctor. ‘What ?’, ‘Stannum’, replied the doctor. Stannum was the
diagnosis of the remedy ; not of the disease. It was given and cured the
patient.

A woman came to me with her hands
so crippled that they were almost closed. The joints were enlarged and she
was hardly able to move a finger. If she did move a finger it was with a
great deal of pain. The leading symptom in that case was that every time
it rained her pains left her. She was then entirely comfortable. Causticum
not only stopped all the pain but also  took the swelling out of her
joints. It was a beginning case of arthritis deformans, and as the remedy
was given in the early stages the cure was complete. I saw her ten years
afterwards and her fingers were as supple as they ever had been during her
past life.

A clergyman’s wife, about 50 years
of age, consulted me on Feb 29th, 1878, complaining of severe dyspepsia
with other symptoms of Natrum muriaticum.
My visit was a hurried one so I did not enter very fully into the case.
Nat mur 6 trit, 6 grains in water twice a day was the prescription : it
cured in three days these symptoms : Hiccup occurring morning, noon and
night, in evidence, for atleast 10 years, which was brought on by quinine
; it was not a hiccup that made much noise but “shook the body to the
ground” ; it used to last about 10 minutes and was ‘very
distressing’.
“How do you know that the hiccup was really produced by quinine
?”, I enquired. She answered : “At three seperate times in my
life I have taken quinine, for tic of the right side of the face, and I
got hiccups each time; the first and second time it gradually went off,
but the third time it did not; when the late Dr.Hynde prescribed it, I
said, “Do not give me quinine as it gives me hiccups,” but he
would give it to me; I took it and it gave me hiccups which lasted until I
took your powders ; it is more than ten years since I took the quinine.’
The cure of the hiccup has proved permanent.

Patient aged 45 years. Has had
uterine haemorrhages for some time (for five consective weeks recently)
and much pain. A solid mass behind the uterus was found, but no definite
uterine neoplasm. Operations disclosed a cystic ovary the size of an
orange, with free papillary outgrowth tending to spread over contiguous
peritoneum. The whole mass was removed, but the papillary spread was
necessarily left. There was no affection of the uterus.
The patient was steadily kept on a medicinal series, including Thuja,
Carcinosin, Silica, Calc carb
up to recent date. There is now
not the least pathological trace of any recurrence.

Wm. T.,  aged 23 occupation
clerk, consulted me, complaining of an impairment of speech, which had
lasted seventeen years. No cause could be learned, although his mother and
others had been interviewed. The case as taken presented the following :-
February 16. Mentally he is weak, indifferent for the most part, with
times of irritation and petulance. Aphonia < between 4 and 5 pm, at
which time the voice is the merest whisper ; < in hot weather, < in
winter, > by expectoration of a lump of black mucus. Three and a half
years ago he had typhoid fever under allopathic treatment, since which
time he is “nervous” with trembling of both arms. This is quite
independent of whether or not he works.

Voice lost in the evening, Brom, Carb v, Phos
< in winter, Carb v, Phos
< in wet weather, Carb v, Phos
< 4 and 5pm, Carb v
Indifferent, apathetic mentally, Carb v, Phos
> by expectoration of black mucus disregarded, as this is Pittsburg

February 18. Gave Carbo veg 1M, single
dose
February 25. Improving, has some voice. P M., S. L
March 27. Improvement continued until a week ago. Repeated Carbo veg
this time 40M
April 25. Practically well. Thinks it is wonderful since time and money
had been spent.

In the year 1876, in the course of
a severe attack of typhus fever during my residence at Liverpool, my
state, as I am told (for I was in delirium), suddenly became very critical
through pneumonic consolidation of the right lung.
Phosphorus was the remedy selected by
Drs.Drysdale, Hayward and Hawkes, who attended me, and under its action I
made a rapid recovery. Hard, dry cough, rusty sputum ; increased at
twilight and until midnight ; < lying on left side; > lying on right
side ; abdomen distended, sore, very sensitive to touch ;
stools
offensive, bloody, involuntary; the anus appearing to remain open.
Each of the symptoms I have italicised is a keynote of Phosphorus.
When any of them are present (with or without pneumonia) Phosphorus
is likely to be the remedy.

Mrs. B, aged 45, had for many
years suffered from a very delicate and irritable stomach, from cankerous
sore mouth (cured by Phytolacca), all in consequence of what is
mistermed scientific treatment. She had also suffered from hay fever,
regularly returning every year on the 16th of September.
Mrs.B returned from Europe, after an absence of several years, on the 26th
of July last ; the voyage had been a very unpleasant one; she had been
very seasick all the time. From the time she left Liverpool till she was
visited by me, on the 27th of July, she had taken literally no nourishment
; broken ice was the only thing that passed her lips. I found her in bed
sitting up, occasionally straining to vomit, very weak, pulse 116 per
minute ; she complained of a violent pain in the occiput, with great heat,
which she had tried to relieve by applications of broken ice ; urinary
secretions suppressed; mouth dry and hot ; she had not slept for a
fortnight and she could not lie down on account of great nervousness, as
she expressed it, which compelled her to change her position and her chair
so very often ; she wandered about all night from chair to chair; was very
disagreeable ; perfect loathing of food, and for a few days had a watery,
very offensive and black looking diarrhoea. The choice of the remedy was
easy enough. I gave her one dose of Arsenicum alb
50M (Fincke), on her tongue, July 27th.
July 28th – has slept in her bed from 10pm to 1am, then became nervous and
restless, but says that she feels better. No medicine.
July 29 – She has been in bed all night, slept; and no return of the
diarrhoea; urinary secretions re-established ; the hot water applications
to her head would have very much relieved the pain; had later some milk
toast, and relished it ; pulse below 90 ; is cheerful and hopeful.
July 31 – Had a still better night ; is better in every respect, but
complains of severe pains in a bunion on the left foot; it is much
inflamed and stings. I gave her now one dose of Nitric Acid CM
(Fincke).
August 1 – The bunion is less painful, otherwise there is not much change
perceptible.
August 2 – Bunion still improving, and on August 3rd no more pain or
inflammation in it. In the evening, same day, I was again summoned to see
her ; found her quite ill; the loose motion and the headache had returned
with great violence ; pulse over 110 ; the same headache as on the 27th
had also returned, also the great restlessness. Gave her one dose of Arsenicum
album
(Fincke) dry on the tongue. Found her better the next day, and
the improvement continued.
On the 6th of August, her bunion began to pain again as on the 31st, gave
her no medicine. Improvement continued satisfactorily ; when the 16th of
September came she had that night ; about 1 am, some oppression of
breathing, which reminded her of the terrible asthmatic attacks she had
had years ago ; she had to sit up for half-an-hour. No medicine.
She fully recovered and travelled for some weeks ; had no hay fever ;
really has had nothing  to complain of since ; enjoys better health
than she has had for years.

Aswin, aged four,
is brought by her mother for constant and chronic running nose (fluent
corya). I do not ask any question. (Any interruption would only break the
chain of thought of the narrator, and all they would have said at first
does not again occur to them in precisely the same manner after that.
Foot-note to S.84 of the Organon.)
While I was going through Dr. Calvin B. Knerr’s Repertory, the boy’s
mother breaks in, “Doctor, he is very angry at times.” (At this
stage I simply note in the case-sheet the word anger.)
I copy on the case-sheet the following portions from Knerr’s Repertory.

NOSE, Coryza, Chronic: Calc., Canth, Colch, Cycl., Sil., Spig.
(page 248)
MIND, Anger (plus above list); Calc.
Again, at this stage, the lady tells: “Doctor, whenever he is at home
on holidays, running nose is not there. But whenever he goes to school, on
those days, it is worse.” To classify this last symptom is a somewhat
difficult job.
I now turn to HOMOEOPATHIC THERAPEUTICS by Dr. Samuel Lilienthal.
At this stage, after a pause, the lady continues, “Doctor, two years
ago he was diagnosed to be suffering from primary complex and we gave a
course of allopathic treatment.”
To classify the symptom (aggravation on the days of going to school) is a
difficult task. for “primary complex’ the equivalent rubric in
homoeopathy is phthisis (prodromal stage).
I just glanced through Samuel Lilienthal’s Homoeopathic Therapeutics (page
858) and under the chapter PHTHISIS PULMONUM the following lines under Calcarea
Carb
. caught my attention:  …very susceptible to
external influences, currents of air, cold, heat, noise, excitement.”
When he goes to school he is exposed to air, noise, excitement and
therefore the above quoted line confirmed my selection of Calc. Carb.
I gave this in 10M potency in single dose and the patient is under
treatment with lot of improvement.

A lady, the
mother-in-law of a fourth stage cancer patient, came to me asking for
medicine for cancer. When I asked her to bring the patient she said that
he won’t come. I asked her to tell me at least in verbatim what he had
said. She replied, “He does not say anything.”
At this stage I asked her whether she did not care to go and see her
son-in-law who is said to be in fourth stage cancer. She replied:
“My daughter wrote me a letter stating that and doctors have said
that he would live for another six months only, and he is not afraid of
death, but he wants to live with family in the same quarters in which he
had been all along living and said that he does not want anyone (be it
friends or relative) to visit him.”
(Sometimes, we do get valuable symptom from the report of
messengers).
Let us now see how to work out this case.
does not want anyone to visit him Company, aversion to
till death wants to live with family in the same
quarters where he had been living all these years
Homesick

COMPANY, aversion to: 46 remedies (page 27 of Knerr’s Repertory)
HOMESICK: 10 remedies (page 50 ..)

Only three remedies, viz., Carbo a., magn. m., and natr. m. are
common to the above two lists.
To confirm one out of these three, all these were studied in HOMOEOPATHIC
THERAPEUTICS (By Dr. Samuel Lilienthal) under the chapter
“”Carcinoma”. Only Carbo a. was described and the
remaining two remedies (magn. m., and natr. m.) were not found.
In the description under Carbo animalis, among other things, the
following words confirmed our selection. Cachexia fully developed.
Carbo animalis cured the case and the
patient is living even today

A lady (maiden) had been an invalid for fourteen years. Her trouble
seemed to center in her stomach. So that for all that long period of time
she could eat nothing but at little Graham bread and milk, hardly enough
to sustain life and in the earlier part of her sickness for a long time
was able only to take a teaspoonfull of milk at a time. She was an almost
literal walking skeleton. I found, after much questioning and several
failures to relieve her much, that about fifteen years before she had with
an ointment suppressed an eczema of the nape and occiput. She boasted that
she had never seen a vestige of it since. I gave that lady Sulphur
200th
and in three weeks from that time had that eruption fully
restored and her stomach trouble completely relieved. The deacon of her
(Presbyterian) church exclaimed as she came walking up a long hill to
service, “Here comes Susan F., who has been dying for the last
fourteen years and lo and behold, she is the biggest, fattest one among
us!” Now how about the relation of skin to internal trouble? I can
report a number of as convincing cases in my own practice cured with Sulphur,
Arsenicum, Causticum
or other remedies. One thing must be recognized
and never lost sight of, viz., that symptoms
weigh whether we can give the
pathological interpretation of them or not.

One
was a lady about thirty years of age, who was overheated in the sun, on an
excursion. She was a member in good standing in the Presbyterian church,
but imagined herself lost and called me in six mornings in succession to
see her die. Lost, lost, lost, eternally lost, was her theme, begging
minister, doctor and everybody to pray for, and with her. Talked night and
day about it. I had to shut her up in her room alone for she would not
sleep a wink or let anyone else.

She
imagined her head was as big as a bushel and had me examine her legs,
which she insisted were as large as a church. After treating her several
weeks with Glonoine, Lach., Natrum carb. and other
remedies on the cause as the basis of the prescription, without the
least amelioration of her condition, I gave her Stramonium,
which covered her symptoms, and in twenty-four hours every vestige
of that mania was gone.

But
for the encouragement I gave the husband that I could cure her she would
have been sent to the Utica Asylum, where her friends had been advised to
send her by the allopaths. I gave her the sixth dilution or potency.

I once had a case of very obstinate constipation in an old syphilitic
case. He was at last taken with very severe attacks of colic. The pains
seemed to extend all through the abdomen, and always came on at night.
After trying various remedies until I was discouraged, for he “got no
better fast,” he let drop this expression, “Doctor, if I could
only keep awake all the time, I would never have another attack.” I
looked askance at him. “I mean,” said he, “that I sleep
into the attack, and waken in it.” I left a dose of Lachesis
200. He never had another attack of the pain, and his bowels became
perfectly regular from that day and remained so. I could give more cases
where this symptom has led me to the cure of ailments of different kinds.
It is enough to say that I have no hesitation in adding my testimony to
that of others as to the value of this symptom
