HoM.
It is with great regret that we report the death on the 15th January,
1961,
at the age of 77 years of Dr. H. Fergie Woods.
An appreciation will appear in the next issue of this journal.
These words were written by Samuel
Hahnemann
over a century and a half ago.
They refer to a form of therapy that sets out to aid the sick person,
not just to attack his symptoms, and to do so by using a drug stimulus
that will by its dynamic nature enhance and not inhibit or interfere with
the vital defense and repair processes that are already in action in the
body.
The aim of such therapy is to convert illness into wellness, and to
maintain this well-being at “top-level”.
Dr. H.
FERGIE WOODS, An appreciation
There will be many who will mourn the passing of Dr. Fergie
Woods.
Throughout the country he was well known as a homoeopathic physician of
great ability and he had a long record of success in this sphere.
Soon after qualifying in
1908
he went to America
to study under Dr. Kent
of Chicago
through a scholarship instituted by Sir Henry Tyler,
father of Dr. Margaret Tyler,
the eminent homoeopathic physician.
Dr. Fergie
Woods
also used manipulation with great success and was responsible for
introducing Dr. Tyler
to this, until then, comparatively new method of treatment.
He had a long association with the
Royal
London Homoeopathic Hospital, from 1909
when he became Resident Medical Officer and throughout the years following
when he was Assistant Physician, and later Physician, for Diseases of
Children and in later years Consulting Physician, a position which he held
until the date of his death.
He was also Physician to the Children’s Homoeopathic Dispensary at
Shepherd’s Bush for many years until it became incorporated with the
hospital.
In addition to his qualities as a physician, he was always available to
help in publicity for the cause of homoeopathy either by writing or
lecturing.
His many literary works are well-known, the most popular undoubtedly
being
“Essentials of Homoeopathic
Prescribing” and “Homoeopathic
Treatment in the Nursery”.
He was also a generous contributor to
Homoeopathy
throughout the years.
Dr. Fergie Woods joined the Council of the British Homoeopathic
Association in February,
1946,
and in all the years he was a regular attender at meetings and valuable
counselor in the affairs of the Association.
My colleagues and I will miss his presence greatly.

DR. HAROLD
FERGIE WOODS
DR. HAROLD FERGIE WOODS died in his sleep on the night of January 14th,
1961, just two
months after the death of his wife Dorothy, in similar circumstances.
Fergie, as he was known to so many of us, was a remarkable person in
many ways, chiefly perhaps shown by the wonderful courage he displayed for
so many years during his gradually increasing blindness, due to his having
been gassed while on active service in the First World War.
One never heard him complain.
It was a great tribute to him that many patients continued to consult
him, in spite of his almost complete blindness, right up to the day of his
death.
In
1908 he
went over to the U.S.A. for six months, accompanied by Dr. John Weir
(as he then was) to study under the great Dr. Kent,
and so started on their return to break with tradition of the low potency
men.

He was R.M.O. at the R.L.H.H. from
1909-1910
and was appointed Assistant Physician for Diseases of Children in 1920,
Full Physician in 1928
and Consultant in 1937.
In those early years too, he was Senior Physician at the Children’s
Homoeopathic Dispensary at Shepherd’s Bush, started by Dr. Roberson Day
about
1920.
The Dispensary was amalgamated with the Hospital in
1937,
and thus became part of the Children’s Outpatient Department there.
As one of the Founders of the International Homoeopathic League in
1925,
Fergie remained a staunch supporter of it and was a frequent attendant at
its Conferences until his sight became too bad.
He leaves three children who are all married with families.
His eldest son, David, is a doctor and is studying Homoeopathy.
Alva Benjamin.
