Homœopathic Medical and Surgical Hospital – Reading, Pa.
Dr. Margaret Hassler, who
received her Pennsylvania license in 1892, joined the medical staff in 1898
and was the first woman physician at the hospital, as well as in the Reading
area. A general practitioner, her interest was children’s care, and she
served as chief of pediatrics. In 1958, when the pediatric department was
completely renovated, it was named the Dr. Margaret Hassler Pediatric
Department. A champion of birth control, Dr. Hassler started the birth
control clinic at the hospital and was instrumental in starting the Planned
Parenthood office in Reading, as well as the Reading Visiting Nurses
Association. She was the first woman to head the Homœopathic Medical
Society of Pennsylvania, and the first woman elected to public office in
Berks County, serving on the Reading School Board from 1921 to 1927. She
died at Community General Hospital in 1962, after 70 years as a physician
and 65 years of service to this hospital.

Dr. Margaret Hassler is
honored in 1958 by Thomas Leinbach, superintendent, left, and Dr. Charles A.
Carabello having the hospital proclaim “The Doctor Margaret Hassler
Pediatric Department” in honor of her loyalty as a “physician,
teacher and friend.”
