BIOCHEMICAL LABORATORY.

Biochemical Laboratory

(Testing of the solutions.)

This laboratory was designed and built for
exclusion of contamination. Central heating with air conditioning and stainless steel covered
benches make for cleanliness. The glassware is mainly Pyrex and Vitreosil and is cleaned using
special and elaborate methods. The water used is distilled in a double automatic Pyrex and
vitreosil still and is spectroscopically pure. The apparatus includes a balance of high
accuracy, colorimeters a spectrophotometer a Spekker Absorptiometer, a Vitreosil furnace
automatically controlled to 1000°C, a hot-air sterilizer automatically controlled to 160°C,
Ultramicroscope, pH and conductivity meters, etc.

The laboratory is suitable for the handling of
highly sub-divided drugs. termed “microdoses”, without their becoming contaminated.
The precautions not only help to exclude chemical contamination but also are directed towards
excluding bacteria from solutions and apparatus. In this laboratory potencies are prepared and
their physical and electrochemical properties studied, including their action on enzymes.
