SOME
NOTES ABOUT HAHNEMANN’S HOROSCOPE
by Peter Morrell
The Elements of Language, 1985 – Peter Morrell
As is well known, Hahnemann was born in Meissen Saxony on 10 April 1755. I
have seen a horoscope published in 1900, for a birth in late evening giving 18 Sagittarius
as the rising sign. Hahnemann did have the small and fine features of a Sagittarian. Cook,
in his biography of Hahnemann, says Hahnenann was born close to midnight. I shall use
11.15pm as the basis for my chart as it just gives Mercury in the 3rd house and Saturn in
the 2nd, the importance of which will become apparent below.
The chart details are as follows:
| Sun | 20 38′ Aries | in 4th house |
| Moon | 13 11′ Aries | in 4th house |
| Mercury | 1 13′ Aries | in 3rd house |
| Venus | 4 54′ Pisces | in 3rd house |
| Mars | 7 09′ Pisces | in 3rd house |
| Jupiter | 9 31′ Virgo | in 9th house |
| Saturn | 28 12′ Capricorn | in 2nd house |
| Uranus | 13 27′ Pisces | in 3rd house |
| Neptune | 4 39′ Leo | in 8th house |
| Pluto | 15 54′ Sagittarius | in 1st house |
| Moon node | 29 18′ Virgo | in 3rd house |
| Ascendent | 13 00′ Sagittarius | |
| Midheaven | 15 00′ Libra |
General features
As an Aries with Sagittarius rising one would expect a person to have a
forceful, daring and passionate nature, easily roused to argument though generally quick to
forgive and forget. Sagittarians also make natural students with great curiosity and
enthusiasm, a love of systems of thought or philosophy and a natural religious bent. Such
people make excellent leaders and administrators and great friends. They also love moving on
to new things and to travel of all kinds, foreign cultures, etc. They can display strong
emotions.
From a technical viewpoint, this chart hinges around Pluto rising in
Sagittarius, square (90 ) to Jupiter in the 9th in Virgo, square a conjunction of 3 planets
in Pisces in the 3rd and – perhaps most importantly – exactly sextile (60 ) the midheaven in
15 Libra.
Pluto rising in Sagittarius square Jupiter in the 9th in Virgo
Virgo is the traditional sign of healing, service and medicine. Jupiter
rules wealth, success, the aristocracy and the Church. There are many elements here. Jupiter
– the ruling planet of Sag – is in the 9th house in Virgo. This indicates a love of
theories, value-systems and philosophies, possibly a religious tinge and a strong link with
medicine and healing (Virgo). But Jupiter is badly aspected both by rising Pluto and by its
opposition (180 ) to Venus and Mars in Pisces. This therefore signifies trouble through
theories and philosophies (Sag and 9th) of a medical nature (Virgo) and through writings
(3rd house).
There is a strong interest in new systems and grand theories, possibly
arrived at hastily or impatiently or on scant evidence. Pluto is the planet of discovery,
Sagittarius symbolises systems of thought and ideas, the rising sign signifies the ego and
the quest for the new. That these theories and discoveries conflict strongly with the
established order is derived from the contact Pluto makes with the Midheaven, dealt with
below. Pluto rising in Sagittarius might also be interpreted as `the creator of a new
religion’. This is not so wide of the mark when we consider the sectarianism and
philosophical divisiveness of many homoeopaths over the years.
Sun and Moon both in Aries in 4th house
In the 4th house this signifies a large and nomadic family. In Aries they
indicate a person who is a pioneer, even a loner, constantly trying out new things and new
ways of looking at (old) things. It signifies someone who sets out alone and wins against
all odds. Someone who has a great curiosity and inquisitiveness and who continues to delve
into things, push at the boundaries of knowledge and make new discoveries throughout their
life. It is this combination that seems to define, for many, the pure essence of `Sam
Hahnemann the Pioneer’. Sun and Moon both in Aries adds the sense of adventure and the
pioneer spirit to family life. Moon in Aries also adds strong ties and an emotional and
private dimension to Hahnemann’s perception of family life.
There is a highly nomadic existence, moving from town to town,
constantlymoving house, general domestic unhappiness or upheaval. It is the nomadicelement
that is dominant, not so much the unhappiness.
Saturn in Capricorn in the 2nd house
This signifies a very slow and difficult rise in life dogged by repeated
setbacks in personal fortunes. Especially, it indicates a persistent lack of cash and a
person who is poor or destitute for most of their life. Success and wealth only come
begrudgingly and towards the end of a long life of hardship and worry. It also signifies
thwarted ambitions and a life frustrated by barriers that prevent one being accepted by
society. This is due to the reciprocal action between 2nd house taurus and saturn capricorn
10th house symbolisms. Thus the reputation suffers from lack of cash, and the poor
reputation deprives one of promotion and progress that would lead to financial improvements.
Catch 22?
Mercury in Aries in 3rd house
This signifies great curiosity and outstanding linguistic skills. Indeed,
it is the linguistic and writing significator par excellence! So we expect to find here a
person with an outstanding grasp of several languages and very good writing and reporting
skills as well as oratorical ability. What adds even greater force and clarity to this,
however, is its position in the sign of Aries. This makes the communicative skills sharper,
faster, more robust and pragmatic. It adds the zest of Mars to the sparkle and wit of
Mercury in the 3rd. However, Mars adds a coarser element leading to disputes, dictatorial
campaign writing and use of harsh language.
Venus, Mars, Uranus conjunction in Pisces in 3rd house
This also shows remarkable linguistic skills, as an orator and a
passionate and eloquent writer and speaker. This can often degenerate however, into abusive,
uncontrolled and crude language. Under stress such a person would be expected to have
violent outbursts of uncontrollable anger and shouting. There is complete loss of control
and an inability to accept another’s point of view. Such a person would be extremely
sensitive to even the slightest criticism and would probably tend to react violently and
abusively. Combined with the 3 planets in Aries and a Sagittarius ascendent, this is a very
fiery and bad-tempered feature.
As with all Piscean things, there is here a `wool-gathering tendency’, a
tendency to draw in from others, the past and other cultures: a collector of ideas, stories
and methods. These are then projected into writings.
Of these aspects the near exact opposition (180 ) between Mars and Jupiter
is the most important. They are also the main ruling planets of the chart, ruling Aries and
Sagittarius respectively. This gives great restlessness and energy. It has the
aggressiveness, irritation and energy of Mars combined with the great expansiveness of
Jupiter. The chief drawback is that such people would tend to exaggerate things. On the plus
side it is a fruitful aspect as it generates many ideas and angles on a problem. There is
also great impatience and a tendency to excess ideas and a lack of discipline. In the case
of this chart this will manifest itself chiefly in writing and communication.
Venus-Mars conjunction in Pisces in direct opposition to Jupiter in Virgo
in Midheaven
This greatly accentuates the above comments about Venus, Mars and Uranus
andthe communication skills. There is a direct opposition between the new medical creation
(Jup Virgo 10th) and the communication skills of the person. Thus Hahnemann can be seen as
his own worst enemy, especially in his less moderate writings and rantings. This feature
also indicates a student of the past, other cultures and history, a love of detail and
precision, and one who creates great conflicts with the established order especially through
their writings. Also a love of grand theories. It is in this combination that the linguistic
and cultural drawing together of ideas and influences can be traced, and that Hahnmenan
appears to have engaged in meticulously over many years. It can be argued that without this
linguistic trait there would be no homoeopathy, because he would not have searched through
medical history for an answer to his dissatisfaction with allopathy. His linguistic skills
allowed him the luxury of a unique window into medical history and diverse medical ideas.
Uranus in Pisces square the Ascendent.
This shows great intelligence and originality combined with very strange,
eccentric methods and a determined, obstinate nature. It also indicates unusual perceptions
and procedures and the investigation of the peculiar. The Uranian person is said never to
heed advice and to dig in their heels when criticised. Under attack, they become even more
convinced that they are right and everyone else is wrong! Sounds familiar!

Wilful, obstinate, determined, strong willed; non-conformist, eccentricity
Pluto rising exactly sextile the Midheaven.
This alignment basically shows that there is a strong and dramatic link
between the discoveries (Pluto) of new systems (Sag), the personal ego (Aries 1st house) and
the reputation (Midheaven). There is a rebellious and anarchical streak and there are
repeated attacks upon one’s reputation and status in society. The ego and the new systems
become so tightly welded and in such conflict with the established order, that the attacks
are not just directed at the theories themselves but also at the individual.
Pluto tends to destroy everything to ashes only to lift a new system
Phoenix-like out of the devastation. As one might expect, Hahnemann’s chart shows similar
revolutionary and Plutonic features with the charts of Henry VIII, Paracelsus and Martin
Luther, all of whom – in their way – challenged and battled with orthodoxy.
Pluto will again enter Sagittarius in the autumn of 1995, so presumably bringing with it the
start of a new revolution of ideas and new ‘voyages of discovery’, as it did in 1499 and
1747 – and precipitating the Voyages of Discovery and the Scientific and Industrial
Revolutions.
Other features
The chart also contains a few minor details of interest. Jupiter and
Neptune both in the ninth, indicate a pure yet traditional religious creed. Saturn is
approaching an opposition (180 ) with Neptune, indicating some scepticism about the more
mystical elements of religion and leanings towards the `sceptical pragmatist’ view of
religion as taken today by natural science. Sun is semisquare (45 ) Mars, indicating more
impatience and bad temper already covered. Moon is semisquare (45 ) Saturn indicating losses
through all family matters and possibly tragic losses of sons and father (less so of
daughters or mother). Mercury is conjunct (0 ) the Moon’s South Node, indicating losses
through writings and one’s writings being out of tune with public opinion. Also inability to
judge the `mood of the times’.
Trends
From the year 1790 major planetary movements begin to strongly influence
thisperson, culminating in strong activity in 1802 and again in 1809-11, during which a long
series of first family/domestic and then knowledge/theoretical conflicts arise. Basically it
is the movement of Pluto into Pisces in the 1790’s, eventually passing through the above
important degrees of Hahnemann’s chart (4-9 Pisces-Virgo) that precipitates first his family
upsets and then his medical discoveries. This combines with similar movements in his
progressed horoscope culminating around 1810. Homoeopathy in general is probably ruled by
Hahnemann’s Jupiter in 9 Virgo.
Looking ahead it is clear that homeopathy ruled by Hahnemann’s jupiter in
virgo will undergo radical developments in the years ahead as pluto enters and moves through
sagittarius and especially as it passes through the critical 9-14 degrees. This will be in
1999-2005 approx.
