PREFACE.
IN the
preface to the first edition of this work, published in 1894, it was
stated that the aim in its preparation, was to condense, giving nothing
but the Essentials, nothing but the barest skeleton of the
subject ; that it was not intended for use as an “Eselsbrücke,”
nor to supplant, but, rather, to accompany the larger text-books on
Materia Medica ; and that is was designed merely as a
re-arrangement and simplification of the subject of homśopathic Materia
Medica for the use of the student. In the
preface to the second edition, published in 1994, gratification was
Expressed at the uniformly favorable criticism bestowed upon the work,
and at the rapid exhaustion of the first edition. New remedies were
added, the index enlarged and corrected and the chapter on pharmacy
improved.In the
third edition, appearing in 1899, which the publishers saw fit, on
account of its popularity, to make a large one, many improvements
suggested by the author’s fifteen years’ experience as a teacher were
incorporated. The mode of preparation of each drug, as far as possible,
was made to conform to the original methods of Hahnemann and others, and
references to the original studies were added. The entire work was
revised, its language corrected, and many pages of new matter were
added, consisting of new remedies and more complete indications for the
use of many of the older ones. The
fourth edition printed in 1908, was bettered considerably, a few pages
of new matter were added, and several innovations in the Materia Medica
and therapeutic field received attention. Being, essentially a students’
manual, it was not deemed wise to enlarge it, but to make it precise and
exact.

The
present or fifth edition has been somewhat revised, but not especially
enlarged. It was gratifying to the author to note that the only American
work on homśopathy mentioned by Professor Bier, of the University of
Berlin, in his classic article recently published favorable to
Homśopathy, was this compend. The work has been issued in a second
German edition.Its use
as a text-book in a number of our medical colleges, its translation into
the German, French and Portuguese languages, the latter with, an
introduction by the late Dr. Richard Hughes, of England, and the
universally favorable reception of the preceding editions, have
encouraged the author to believe that it fills the place in our
literature for which it was originally designed.

FOREWORD.
This
valuable little book on Materia Medica has found its way to the
practitioners in Seventh Edition, as a guide. The opportunity has now
been taken to offer this book with its new print under the kind
permission of M/s Boericke & Tafel of Philadelphia, U. S. A. For
General revision of successful College Text. This is
a comprehensive, easy-to-use reference covering the 326 drugs-from
professional behaviour to students of Homśopathic Science, based on the
author’s wide experience.The
prompt acceptance of the work by the homśopathic profession proved that
the author had not been wrong in believing that others had felt need of
a work of the kind as well as himself. It is
our believe that this new Indian edition will soon make a place for
itself close to the hand of every Homśopathic practitioner of our land
too.Calcutta.
