GENERALITIES.

Impossible to keep quiet in any position one minute; whilst seated would
constantly change position, particularly the lower extremities, which

Almost irresistible desire to lie in bed from general depression and

At present I am in a very weak state; my muscular strength, which was
very great (being able to work at the most difficult gymnastic exercises
for hours together, without fatigue, and to lift with either arm
upright, over my head, many times in succession, a fifty-six pound
weight), has almost entirely left me, and all my endurance seems gone
(after six weeks), [1c]. ► Felt languid and uneasy through the day

In the first days of the proving, the pains come on at night, and are on
the left side, extending backward to the body or head; but after some
days they are continued through the entire day, affect both sides of the
body, and do not extend backward constantly, but often across, from one
side to the other, as in the head, from one temple to the other, [2]. ►
Transient shifting pain on the right side, commencing at the wrist, then
to shoulder, hypochondria, knee, and along the tibia to the ankle,
relieved by motion (eighth day), [4].
► Fugitive pains through the left
side (third day), [7]. ► A dull darting pain in the right side,
from within out (eighth day), [11].
► A sharp darting pain in the left
side, several times during the day, then in the right side; at one time
a very sharp darting passed up the right side, very peculiar
(twenty-second day); 5 P.M., sharp pain in the left side, sometimes
extending to the right shoulder, then to the right side, then spread
over the upper part of the back; these pains continued for a long time
(twenty-seventh day), [11]. ► Erratic pain in different parts of the
body and head (third day), [3]. ► Erratic pains in the limbs, chest, and
head, with the chilliness (after seven hours, sixth day), [3]. [530.] ► Shooting pains in various parts of the
body, sometimes in the chest, sometimes in the hypochondria, limbs,
etc.; at times in the joints, at others seemingly in the muscles; always
passing off quickly (ninth day), [3].
► Vague pains in different parts of
the body (twelfth day); pains still continue, but with diminished
intensity (thirteenth day), [3]. ► Pain in right side and right knee-joint,
at irregular intervals, in the evening (fifteenth day), [3]. ► At 10
o’clock, pains in the limbs, side, hypochondria, and abdominal muscles
manifest themselves and continue in a greater or less degree during the
afternoon and evening; also pains in the head, right side, parietal
region; in addition to the sticking pains mentioned, which seem to be in
the muscles and ligaments of the joints, pricking or stinging pains in
the skin of different parts of the body and limbs; these pains are
sometimes of a pricking character, as if produced by extremely fine
needles; at others, attended with a burning sensation, as if from
nettles, never appearing in different parts simultaneously, but always
confined to one spot at a time; they manifest themselves chiefly in the
afternoon and evening, and almost exclusively while sitting in a warm
room; are seldom felt during exercise in the open air (sixteenth day), [3]. ►
The sticking or boring rheumatic pains are felt less to-day,
occasionally in the limbs (seventeenth day), [3]. ► The
pricking or stinging pains in the integuments predominate; to-day they
are felt in the limbs, on the chest, head, face; sometimes in the lips
and in the eyes (seventeenth day), [3].
► (The rheumatic sticking or boring
pains in the limbs, hypochondria, and other parts, have almost entirely
ceased, or given place to the pricking or stinging pains in the
integuments), (nineteenth day), [3].
► After taking tea, in the evening,
all the pains subsided, but came on again slightly just before going to
bed (sixteenth day), [1]. ► After sleeping about two hours, in the
afternoon, all the symptoms were somewhat better (seventh day), [9a]. ►
The symptoms all disappeared after eating peppermint candy, in the
afternoon (eighth day), [9]. [540.] ►
All the symptoms are worse while sitting, and pass off while moving, [11]. ►
Thinks the symptoms return every four weeks, and continue about six
days, and then remit, [7].
SKIN.
►
Integuments of the face and head seem unnaturally rigid (fifth day), [2]. ►
Eruptions. ► Red blotches
that burn on rubbing, [3]. ► On shaving, the face, which is quite
tender, is observed to have an eruption of small, reddish, rough, scaly,
erythematous patches, the size of a pea (resembling barber’s itch),
scattered about on the left side only of the face, and most near the
commissure of the lips; no decided pain or itching, but an unpleasant
sense of tension (seventh day); eruption on the face less prominent, yet
rough (eighth day), [2]. ► Several papulæ have sprung up around the
nose, which are red, and smart when touched, one at the base of each
ala, and two on the septum narium (seventh day); the papulæ exude a
yellowish humor which soon forms a crust (eighth day); eruption drying
up (tenth day), [3]. ► About the twelfth day, an eruption broke
out about the lips and thighs, particularly on the inside of the thigh;
the papulæ are isolated, hard, white, and flattened; some of them have
a small red point in the centre; they itch slightly on first making
their appearance; when scratched, the itching becomes more violent, and
a burning sensation supervenes; a deep redness is diffused through the
part, which lasts about five minutes; in several hours they become more
elevated or acuminated, and finally, in about twenty-four hours,
gradually disappear without suppuration or desquamation, and others
spring up. Several of these papulæ also made their appearance on the
wrist and between the fingers. The eruption continues to the present
time (seventeenth day). Several pimples also made their appearance on
the prepuce; the itching is always worse during the afternoon and
evening; not after going to bed. The eruptions till continues on the
thighs; also on the wrists, between the fingers, and on the prepuce,
which latter itches excessively, in the morning, on rising; itching
always worse in a warm room; also in the evening and morning (nineteenth
day). The pimples usually disappear in twenty-four hours, and give place
to others; they are always isolated, white, and flattened, on their
first appearance, becoming more elevated when scratched; a redness
diffuses itself through the part, which remains sometimes ten or fifteen
minutes (twentieth day); eruption still continues the same
(twenty-second day), [3]. ► Eruption of small pimples on the chin
(twenty-eighth day), [1]. ► A pimple on upper lip (fortieth day), [1]. ►
One or two very small sore pimples on the face, loins, and seat,
pricking like a pin on touching (seventeenth day), [1c]. [550.] ► Small boil on right shoulder-blade
(forty-first day); very painful
(forty-second day); not so painful (forty-third day); no pain whatever,
but slight soreness when touched (forty-fourth day); boil quite gone
(forty-fifth day), [1]. ► Sensations. ►
On rising, in the morning, an unpleasant sensation of bruised soreness
and tension in the integuments of the face, especially on the forehead,
above the left eye and around it; somewhat sensitive when pressed or
rubbed; continued for some time (fifth day), [2]. ► The
skin of the whole body is sensitive, and leaves a burning sensation when
scratched (seventeenth day), [3]. ► Sometimes excessive itching of the skin
(nineteenth day), [3]. ► Tingling itching in various parts of the
skin, hands, face, uncovered parts, in one place or another, all the
time (seventh day), [2]. ► Itching in the commissure of the fingers
of the left hand; worse at night or evening, but more or less constant
(fourteenth day), [2]. ► Itching in different parts of the body
for a few minutes (twenty-eighth day), [1].
► Itching under the chin
(twenty-eighth day), [1]. ► Slight itching in different parts of the
body, as if there were small pimples (thirty-ninth day), [1]. ►
Troublesome itching and stinging sensation in the neck, all round, like
pins pricking (forty-ninth day), [1].

Itching; stinging itching at the top of thorax, with redness, stinging
as if flea-bitten, worse on rubbing (seventeenth day), [1c]. ► 10
P.M., itching on the lower limbs, also on other parts of the body;
rubbing felt grateful, but did not relieve; soon as the rubbing ceased,
was felt a burning sensation (twenty-fourth day), [11].
SLEEP.
►
Sleepiness. ► Excessive and
continued yawning, for one hour after lying down (thirteenth
day), [4]. ►
Inclination to stretch and yawn, with the dull and stupid feeling, at 4
P.M. (sixteenth day), [3]. ► Inclination to drowse and slight headache (five hours after first dose,
third day), [9]. ► Drowsiness in the daytime (sixth day), [6]. ►
Feeling of drowsiness and nausea, but unable to sleep for more than a
few minutes (forty-second day), [1].
► Drowsy feeling; unrefreshing sleep;
dreaming; wakefulness and heavy sleep (seventeenth day), [1c]. ► Sleepy
and dull (forty-fourth day), [1]. ► Heavy sleep, with dreams (eleventh day), [1c]. [570.]
► Slept with my mouth open
(eighty-fourth day), [1]. ► Sleeplessness. ►
Sleeplessness at night, [5]. ► Sleeplessness; restless sleep, with
anxious incongruous dreams (first night); restless sleep; tossing about
in bed before going to sleep; frequent waking, and difficulty of going
to sleep for a long time; sleep unrefreshing (second night); disturbed
and restless sleep, with a variety of unimaginable and incoherent
dreams; worse after 4 A.M. (fifth night); tossing about in bed for two
hours before going to sleep (fifth night); restless sleep (thirteenth
night); highest degree of restlessness all night (fourteenth night);
much the same (fifteenth night); fell asleep at 1 A.M., after which
frequent waking (twenty-second night), [4].
► Sleep somewhat disturbed with
feverish tossing about (second day), [3].
► Rest very much disturbed, little
sleep (third night); sleeplessness at night (sixth night); disturbed
sleep (seventeenth night), [6]. ► Since commencing this proving I have not
slept so well; I used seldom or never to wake in the night; now I
frequently do (thirty-eighth day); sleep better (fortieth day), [1]. ►
Night somewhat restless, first part (first night); restlessness till 12
or 1, in the morning (second night), [2].
► Excessively restless; dozing for a
few minutes, and waking all through the night; unable to lie still, with
fever and perspiration, pain in the small of the back, burning feet
(sixteenth night); very restless night (eighteenth night), [1]. ►
Restlessness at night, with inability to think (seventh
night), [9]. ►
Restless at night, after 4 o’clock (after a month), [7]. [580.] ► Became restless and unable to sleep,
about 3 or 4 A.M. (very unusual), (first night); very restless (second,
third, and fourth nights); entire sleeplessness, after 4 A.M. (fifth

Restless tossing pretty much the entire night, no sleep until towards
morning (first night); restless during the night; could get no sleep,
after the first nap, until daylight in the morning (seventh night), [2a]. ►
Have been restless for some nights, waking up at times, towards morning;
dreams; always sleep well, seldom awake at night (fifth day), [10]. ►
Dreams. ► The first
symptom I noticed was constant dreaming at night, after having retired
to sleep; the dreams were of the ordinary occurrences of the day,
sometimes mixed with the fantastic, [8].
► Frequent dreams of a gloomy character,
rousing from sleep, worse about midnight (seventh night), [9]. ►
Dreamed of having received an announcement of the death of a brother,
and upon awaking found myself shedding tears, which continued thus to
affect me as if real, for several hours (first night); anxious and
unpleasant dreams, of which, on awaking, in the morning, had no
recollection (second night); unimaginable and incoherent dreams (fourth
night); incoherent dreams, worse towards morning (fifth night); dreams
of every variety (tenth night); troubled and vexed dreams (eleventh
night); every variety of fanciful dreams (thirteenth night); most vivid,
congruous, and coherent dreams; also incoherent and disgusting dreams,
all in rapid succession (fourteenth night); much the same (fifteenth
night); frequent waking from the most vivid, horrible, and frightful
dreams (twenty-first night), [4]. ► Dreamed all night; dreams of death in the
family (second night); frightful dreams; dreams of death; much affected
by it (third night); again troubled with dreams and restlessness;
dreamed that two near relatives had died; unable to remember anything
dreamed until after rising (fourth night), [7]. ► Many

FEVER.
►
Chilliness. [590.] ► Chilliness, on rising, after being seated
for three hours, with sensation of heat in the chest, and erratic pains
in the limbs, chest, and head; these symptoms continue from 1 to 3 P.M.,
with disposition to stretch, and chilliness when moving about; cold
hands in a warm room (after seven hours, sixth day), [3]. ►
Frequent chilly sensation; continued a long time (twenty-seventh day), [11]. ►
Chilly unpleasant sensation through the day (third day), [7]. ► Chilly
sensation, in the evening, with cold feet (eleventh day), [4]. ► Some
chilliness, and slight headache, cold hands and feet, for some time
(sixth day), [2]. ► Feeling of chilliness, with flushed face
(fifth day), [1c]. ► At 2 P.M. cold chills running over me,
and gooseflesh; fingers cold (seventh day), [2]. ►
Coldness of body and shivering, with the irritable feeling in head
(eighty-fourth day), [1]. ► Coldness of body, shivering (second day),
[1a]. ►
Cold and shivered (eighteenth day), [1].

Soon get cold in the feet and legs, when walking outdoors (fifty-third
day), [1]. ►
Feet inclined to be cold (eighteenth day), [1]. ► Heat and
Sweat. ► Highest degree of
excitability; high fever; strong bounding pulse, 120; sensation of great
heat, with thirst (here I should say, that for the last week I have been
obliged to get up every night and drink), imagining the room to be very
hot and close; oppression of the chest, with rapid respiration;
difficulty of breathing, as if there were no air in the room; pacing
backward and forward in the room in the greatest anxiety, then throwing
myself on the bed, and rolling from one side to the other in the
greatest mental agony, without really knowing why; continued in this
state till 1 A.M., when I fell asleep; after which, would frequently
wake up from the most vivid, horrible, and frightful dreams
(twenty-first night), [4]. ► Fever, perspiration, and burning feet,
with the restlessness (sixteenth night), [1].
► Considerable fever, with the dull
painful stupid feeling in head (seventh day), [8a]. ► Head
feels hot and stupid (thirty-fifth day), [1].
► Unnatural heat of the head, hands,
and feet all the time (twelfth day), [2].
► Burning heat of the face, flushed
after tea, with headache in the left temple (twelfth day); flushed face
continues every evening (fifteenth and sixteenth days), [1c]. ► Hands
feel hot and clammy to me, but not so to any one else (thirty-fifth
day), [1]. ►
Feeling as if the heat of the room was unbearable, producing
perspiration (sixteenth day), [1c].

CONDITIONS.
►
Aggravation. ► (Morning), On awaking, headache; headache in
left side of head; till afternoon, headache in back of head; itching of
the scalp; on rising, œdema of the eyelids; after rising, œdema and
redness of the eyelids; teeth feel elongated; toothache; tongue coated
white; clammy taste; dirty taste; on awaking, hoarseness and soreness in
throat; on arising, dryness and huskiness in throat; when swallowing,
sensation of scraping in throat; on awaking, constrictive sensation in
pharynx; eructations tasting of sulphur; 6 A.M., woke with pain in left
hypochondriac region; on waking, abdomen distended; rumbling in the
bowels, followed by griping pains; uneasiness in the bowels, as if
diarrhœa would come on; after getting up, bleeding from anus; tingling,
with itching, in the orifice of the urethra; on waking, desire to
urinate with tenesmus of the bladder; on rising, passage of a large
quantity of dark-red urine; hoarseness; cough; on waking, stiffness in
cords of neck; pain in loins; pain over right kidney; unwilling to get
up; on rising, itching on prepuce; sensation of bruised soreness and
tension in skin of face. ► (Forenoon), 9 A.M., irritable feeling in head,
with soreness of the eyes; pain over left eyebrow; 10 A.M., stiffness
and itching of the eyelids; pains in ear; 11.30 A.M., discharge of
yellowish water from right nostril; 9 A.M., feeling of nausea; boring
pain in or near umbilicus; 11 A.M., discharge of stinking flatus; 9
A.M., inclination to diarrhœa; increased flow of urine; 10 A.M.,
scraping sensation low down in bronchia, pain in the limbs; rheumatic
pains in right elbow. ► (Noon), Bruised sensation over head; pain in
socket of right eye. ► (Afternoon), Shooting pains in left parietal
region; 6 P.M., while walking and driving, pain in left side of head;
sneezing; 4 P.M., sensation across bridge of nose as if nasal bones were
being pressed together; 2.30 to 4 P.M., teethache; eructations, tasting
of carbonic acid gas; 6 P.M., pain in left hypochondriac region; 5 P.M.,
pain in right iliac region; 4 P.M., cutting pain in lower part of
rectum; diarrhœa pains; 1 P.M., cutting pain in under navel; 4 P.M.,
oppression of chest, with dull and stupid feeling; while walking in the
open air, sensation of heat in the præcordia, with fulness in the
abdomen; 4 P.M., on ascending stairs, beating of the heart; 2 P.M.,
moving or turning the head, soreness and stiffness of the neck; 4 P.M.,
pain in muscles of neck and shoulders; 3 P.M., heaviness and weight of
extremities; darting pain at inner angle of right patella; 4 P.M., pain
in dorsal and plantar surfaces of feet; itching; 1 to 3 P.M.,
chilliness, with heat in head, and pains in limbs, chest, and head; 2
P.M., cold chills, with gooseflesh. ►
(Evening), Irritable and morose
temper; nervous and cerebral symptoms; muddled and confused feeling in
head, with inability to think; heaviness and weariness in the head; pain
in temples; headache over right eye; 10 P.M., itching of the scalp; on
going to bed, faceache; 10 P.M., bleeding of gums; roughness and
sensation of erosion in throat; sickness of stomach, with rumbling in
the abdomen; pains in stomach; when going to bed, tender spot just under
navel when touched; griping pain in bowels, with nausea; pains in
abdomen; itching in the opening of the urethra; 7 P.M., cutting pain in
the urethra; oppression of chest, with hurried respiration; 10 P.M.,
weariness and pain in the loins and lower extremities; on lying down,
boring rheumatic pains in various parts of the body; trembling of arms
and hands; on lying down, boring pains in bones of hand; pain in joints
of fingers; pain in right knee-joint and right side; itching; 10 P.M.,
itching over the body; chilly sensation, with cold feet; flushed face. ► (Night),
After going to bed, pain over right eye; awoke with faceache; toothache
in left upper molars; dirty taste in mouth, with thirst; on awaking,
rawness and soreness in pharynx; pain in bowels; while asleep, emission
of semen; in bed, on drawing a long breath, stitches in lower lobe of
left lung; throbbing of the arteries; itching in the commissures of
fingers of left hand; sleeplessness; restlessness; constant dreaming. ► (About midnight),
Gloomy dreams. ► (Contact), Pain in teeth. ► (After dinner),
Aching of some decayed teeth in lower jaw; stitches in the heart. ► (While eating
breakfast), Soreness of some sound teeth. ► (After eating),
Pain in teeth; peculiar sensation at cardiac orifice of stomach;
rumbling in abdomen. ► (Exercising mental faculties), Depression,
rapid respiration, and anxiety. ► (After exercise), Weakness of the loins. ► (High degree of
heat), Pains in teeth. ► (Deep inspiration), Colic pains in left side
of abdomen. ► (Laughing), Pain in left hypochondriac region.
► (Lying on
left side), Colic pains in that side of abdomen. ► (After lying
down), Yawning. ► (After a meal), Sinking faint feeling. ► (Movement),
Headache in forehead, with pressure over right eye; pain in left
hypochondriac region; pain in loins; pain over right kidney; pain over
sacrum. ► (Moving
head to side affected), Soreness and stiffness of
sterno-cleido-mastoid muscles of right side of neck. ► (Moving left arm),
Pain in muscles of upper part. ► (Pressure), Tenderness in forehead over eyes
and in left frontal protuberance; bruised pain in left eye; pain in
orbits of eyes; pain over region of kidneys; pain near left side of
sternum; tenderness along whole spinal column. ►
(Reading), Uneasiness in
epigastrium, with nausea. ► (On rising), After being seated for three
hours, chilliness, with heat in head, and pain in limbs, chest and head.
► (Warm room),
Pain in both temples; itching; cold hands. ►
(Rubbing), Itching at top of thorax.
► (Scratching),
Itching of eruption on thighs and hips; burning sensation of skin of
whole body. ► (While sitting), Darting pain up the urethra;
pleuritic pain in left sternum; in a warm room, pains through body; all
symptoms. ► (While
asleep), Grinding of the teeth. ►
(Standing), Weakness of the loins;
pain over sacrum. ► (During stool), Discharge of blood from anus. ► (Stooping),
Pain in abdomen; stiffness and pain in left knee. ►
(Study), Dull stupefying pain in
head. ► (Turning
around), Pain in head. ► (Turning head suddenly), Pain in left side of
scalp. ► (After
urinating), Itching-prickling sensation in the lips of the
meatus. ► (Walking),
In cold air, pain in teeth; uneasiness in epigastrium, with nausea;
bruised sensation in top of thigh; tearing pain in right ankle. ► (On waking),
Feeling of rawness in throat. ►
Amelioration. ► (Afternoon), Pains in head; pains in
hypochondria; after sleeping two hours, all symptoms; after eating
peppermint candy, all symptoms. ► (Evening), After talking tea, all pains. ► (Contact with
anything cold), Pains in head. ►
(When eating), Colic pains. ► (After eating),
Headache over left eye. ► (Exercise), Pain over eyes; pleuritic pain
left of sternum. ► (Expectoration), Cough. ►
(Holding head backwards), Heaviness
and weariness in head. ► (Lying on part), Bruised feeling in left side
of head. ► (Motion),
Dull pain in head; pain over eyes; pain near left side of sternum; pain
in left ankle; pain in tendo Achillis of left foot; pains through right
side; all symptoms. ► (Moving head to opposite side), Soreness and
stiffness in sterno-cleido-mastoid muscles of right side of neck. ► (Pressure),
Pain in head; headache in left temple and left side of head; bruised
