IGNATIA.
ABDOMEN.
►
Hypochondria. ► Great
distension of the hypochondria, especially in the sides, pit of the
stomach and small of the back; on account of the tension and fulness
under the ribs she was unable to breathe; with constant
anxiety; she was obliged to loosen the clothes, [18]. ► A
constrictive sensation in the hypochondria, as in constipation, with
onesided headache, as though a nail were pressed into the brain, in the
morning (after twenty hours), [1].
[Our ancestors called this kind of headache clavus. This kind of pain is
characteristic of Ignatia; a pressure as from a sharp-pointed
instrument, which is also seen in other symptoms, as in 449, 567, 586,
where also, “pressure as with a hard substance” seems to
belong as in 84, 608. -Hahnemann.] ► Pain
in the spleen, extending from the stomach and thence to the
vertebral column; after an hour this sensation changed into stitches,
which extended up into the thorax, but did not seem to affect the
thoracic viscera; an hour later there were again sticking and burning in
the region of the spleen, and this was repeated several times during the
day, [1a]. ► *Painful pressure in the region of the spleen
and pit of the stomach, which, after half an hour,
intermitted and continued to recur in intermitting paroxysms till toward
noon (third day), [9a]. ► Umbilical and Flanks. ► A sensation in the abdomen, in the region
of the umbilicus, as if from something alive (after eight hours), [1]. [370.]
► A painful pressure near the left
side of the umbilicus, [3]. ► A painful pressure in a small spot, near
the right side of the umbilicus, which is aggravated by deep breathing
and voluntary distension of the abdomen, obliging him to retract the
navel, which relieves; with rumbling in the abdomen, [19]. ►
Griping colic exactly in the umbilical region, whereupon the pain,
consisting of pinching and fine sticking, extended into the left side of
the chest, [1]. ► Cutting in the umbilical region, [16a]. ►
Cutting pain in the umbilical region (after 18 drops), [11]; (sixth day), [10a].
► Sharp sticking, above and to the left
of the umbilicus, [3]. ► Fine sticking colic beneath the umbilicus
(after one and two hours), [1]. ► Flatulent colic above the umbilicus,
alternating with profuse accumulation of saliva in the mouth (after one
hour), [1]. ►
Cutting pain in the right side of the abdomen (third day), [11]. ►
Colic, at first griping, then sticking, in one side of the abdomen
(after two and ten hours), [1]. [380.] ►
Pressure in both sides of the upper abdomen or in the hypochondria, [1]. ►

Abdomen. ► Distension of
the abdomen, especially in the umbilical region (sixth day), [10a]. ►
Distension of the abdomen, with pressure in the umbilical region (fourth
day), [10a]. ►
Flatulent distension, immediately after eating, [1]. [Alternate action with 396. -Hahnemann.] ► Pinching distension in the whole abdomen,
immediately after eating, only on standing, worse on walking, and
increasing on continuing to walk until it becomes intolerable, without,
however, seeming to be caused by flatulence; while sitting quietly it
soon disappears without the emission of flatulence (after four hours), [1]. ►
Rumbling in the abdomen, [7];
(after 18 drops), [11]. ► Rumbling in the abdomen, in the afternoon
(third day), [9a]. ► Rumbling in the abdomen, as when fasting
(after one hour), [1]. ► Rumbling and noises in the intestines,
[1]. [390.]
► Rumbling and gurgling in the
abdomen (soon, second day), [17]. ► Loud rumbling in the abdomen, after
eating, [1]. ►
Rumbling in the abdomen, followed by urging to stool, without an
evacuation during the forenoon; but during the afternoon there were
several evacuations of normal fæces (fifth day), [17]. ►
Frequent rumbling in the abdomen (fifth day), [9a]. ► A kind
of anxiety rises from the abdomen after breakfast (after twenty hours), [1]. ►
Emission of much flatus, at night, even during sleep, with constant
collection of it, so that everything in the abdomen seems to turn to
gas, [1]. ►
Profuse emission of flatulence immediately after eating (after
twenty-six hours), [1]. ► Easy discharge of flatus (after half an
hour), [1]. [The reverse is
usually the secondary action. -Hahnemann.] ►
*Unsatisfactory, short, and abrupt emission of flatus, having, an
offensive odor, not without exertion of the abdominal muscles
(after twenty-four and thirty hours), [1].
►► *A peculiar sensation of
weakness in the region of the upper abdomen and pit of the stomach
(after two hours), [1]. [Compare
411, 721; this sensation of weakness in the region of the pit of the
stomach is a characteristic symptoms of Ignatia. -Hahnemann.] [400.] ► Anxious painful fulness in the abdomen
after eating (in the evening, after thirty-six hours), [1]. ► The
abdomen seems distended after eating, [1].
► Abdomen becomes tense after eating,
mouth dry and bitter, without thirst; one cheek is red (in the evening),
[1]. ►
Peculiar tensive pain, not in the stomach; but in the upper abdomen; it
seemed as though the walls of the abdomen were pushed downward and the
diaphragm upward; this pain seemed worse in the region of the spleen,
whence it extended backward towards the vertebral column; it was
alternately worse in different places; this pain disappeared entirely
for four hours but returned at 3 P.M., and became quite violent towards
evening, when it extended upward into the chest, where it at times
became an acute burning, which, however, was worse in the vertebral
column in the region of the ganglion cœliacum; during these attacks
there were frequent eructations of air, always, followed by transient
relief of the pain, [16a]. ► Tormented by flatulence, which even
presses upon the bladder (after ninety-six hours), [1]. ► A kind
of colic, a contractive pain from both sides just beneath the ribs
(after a quarter of an hour), [1].
► Griping in the abdomen
(after one hour), [1]. ► Griping colic, in the open air, as if
diarrhœa would ensue, [1]. ► Pinching colic in all the intestines,
even sometimes after eating, when walking in the open air, [1]. ►
Pressive pinching in the abdomen, after the least fruit, especially when
standing and walking, which disappears while sitting, [1]. [410.] ► Spasmodic flatulent colic in the upper
abdomen, in the evening on falling asleep, and in the morning on waking
(after eight hours), [1]. ► Drawing and griping in the abdomen; in the
rectum it occurred like a pressure, with qualmishness and weakness in the pit of the stomach, and paleness of
the face (after forty-eight hours, two days before
menstruation), [1]. ► Flatulent colic in the evening in bed; a
kind of pressure appearing here and there in the abdomen, always
returning on waking at night, [1].
► Painful sensation in the upper
abdomen, as if something pressed upward toward the chest, at 6 P.M., [16a]. ►

like a cardialgia, which extends up into the throat, in the morning in
bed, when lying upon the side; it disappears when lying upon the back
(after forty hours), [1]. [See
note to S. 608. -Hahnemann.] ► Pain

with accumulation of stringy saliva in the mouth (after four, twelve,
and thirty-six hours), [1]. ► Painless contraction of the anus, a
kind of stricture, for several days (after twelve hours), [1]. ► Drawing

eversion and prolapsus of the rectum, [1]. ►
Ineffectual desire for stool in the rectum, not in the anus (after one
hour and a half), [1]. ► *Excessive desire for stool, more in the upper
intestines and upper abdomen; it causes great urging, nevertheless the
stool is insufficient, though soft; the urging continues long
after the stool (after twenty hours), [1].
► Frequent, almost ineffectual desire
for stool, with colic, tenesmus, and tendency to prolapsus of the rectum
(after forty-eight hours), [1]. ► Urging to stool, with a feeling in the
abdomen generally as though he had taken a purgative; this sensation was

root of the penis, especially while walking, disappearing while leaning
against the small of the back, when standing, [1]. ► (Every
shock of the cough shoots with a painful sensation into the penis, like

an alternation of the lascivious symptoms, 522, 528, 524, 529 last a
long time as a secondary effect; Cocculus removed it. -Hahnemann.] ► Profuse emission, during the first night
(in a young man in whom this had almost never occurred), [1]. ► Female.

promotes menstruation, [4].
[Omit Hahnemann’s note Bergius simply says that Ignatia is
“emmenagoges.” No mention of dose. -Hughes.] ► Menstruation delayed for some days, [1]. [This seems to be an infrequent
alternate action, not a real secondary effect; at least, with me,
Ignatia seems to have caused the opposite in very many cases, viz., very
early menstruation is its primary effect, and therefore it relieves too
early (and too profuse), menstruation in cases where the other symptoms
correspond. -Hahnemann.] ► Menses
discharge in clots, [1]. ► Menstruation is scanty, though the
discharge is black and offensive, [1].® 2000
