SKIN.
► Objective. ► Eruptions, Dry. [270.]
► Eruption on the skin, consisting of isolated, sharply
defined, somewhat elevated bright-red spots, with elevations similar to the sting of a wasp,
confluent on the ears and backs of the hands; after a few days they became brownish-yellow,
like the so-called liver-spots; there was no desquamation except on the ears, which was a
fine mealy desquamation; even after four weeks burning spots could be seen, [20]. ► Eruption resembling
roseola, but the spots are more elevated and larger, confluent on certain portions of the
chest and arms, and look something like petechiæ; the eruption disappears at the end of
four days, without perceptible desquamation, [11]. ► Uneasiness during two days, followed by a very hard chill, which is
succeeded by heat and an eruption of very circumscribed lenticular patches; this eruption
gives rise to intense itching and pricking of the skin; it is like measles, but is without
any catarrhal symptoms. On the third day the fever subsides, and the eruption grows paler.
On the seventh day the skin has a mottled appearance. The eruption does not wholly disappear
for five days; no desquamation, [7]. ► Eruption of a number of red blotches all over the body, but
especially on the face, [3]. ►
Red miliary eruption, sometimes discrete, sometimes confluent, preceded by headache,
vertigo, and loathing, [5]. ►
In a few days a general copaival erythema declared itself, with the usual character of that
eruption, [12]. ►
Copaiba produces a rash well described by Judd in his work; a rosy erythema of
“pumiceous” aspect, as though the skin had been bitten by insects, [11]. ► Eruption like scarlet
fever or nettlerash over the whole body; this eruption appeared first in the face,
especially on the forehead, afterwards on the backs of the hands, then on other portions of
the body, with severe burning in the skin, [20]. ► *Nettlerash (several authors). ►
Large red blotches all over the body, with constipation and some fever, [6]. [280.] ► Elevated eruption, confluent on the hands and feet, scarlet,
or like elevated measles, [13]. ►
Small furfuraceous tetter on the concha of the left ear, with burning pain only when
touched, [2]. ►
Urticaria, at first on the face, especially the forehead, then on the back of the hands, and
finally in other parts. Burning of the skin, slight sore throat (without swelling of the
pharynx or tonsils), and sensation as if a violent perspiration would break out, as it does
afterwards. No fever or thirst; red, distinct raised spots, like bug-bites, running together
only on the ears and the backs of the hands. On the sixth day the redness disappears, and
the spots assume a brown color, without desquamating, except on the ears, [8]. ► Small, red, slightly
itching pimples on the upper part of the forehead, on hairy scalp, above the ears and on the
occiput, [2]. ► Red
itching spot on the left arm, [2]. ► Red slightly itching spots at the sternal region and the
right axilla, [2]. ►
Yellowish spots of the size of a dime, of irregular shapes, and slightly itching, on the
right cheek, morning and evening, [2]. ► Eruptions, Moist. ►
The eruption which now appeared was a modified pemphigus, and was generalized over the whole
body, commencing at the flexures of the joints. Where the skin was thin the bullæ aborted,
but where it was thicker they were regularly raised and more or less lasting. The discharge
from the patches deprived of their epidermis was excessive, of an offensive odor, and very
viscid, [12]. ►
After six weeks of emollient treatment the pemphigus disappeared in a general desquamation, [12]. ► Red humid tetter
(after eight days) on the upper lip, which is swollen and painful when touched, [2]. [290.] ► Small white miliary vesicles on a red base on the left wing
and tip of the nose, [2]. ►
Redness and moist acridity on the scrotum and between it and the thighs, [21]. ► Eruptions, Pustular.
► Tormenting eruptions only between the fingers and on
both forearms as far as the bend of the elbow; pustules like the itch, with red areolæ,
containing a red watery fluid, with itching pain, [18].
► Mild eruptive fever, with inconsiderable general heat
and moderated headache. An eruption quite like that of distinct variola comes out on the
third day; it is purple-hued and not very well marked. In twelve hours it spreads, sinks
down, and each of its pustules becoming depressed, soon forms only a petechial blotch, which
then proceeds to enlarge itself, to be confounded with adjacent blotches, and thus to become
confluent. It gradually fades away, and on the fifth day disappears, [10]. ► Boil on the pubis, [2]. ► Subjective.
► Burning in the skin of the scrotum, [2]. ► Itching of the cheeks, here
and there, in the eyebrows and on the chin, [2].

afterwards took place in bed, [20]. [310.] ► Profuse and inodorous
sweat in the morning, [2]. ►
Sour-smelling sweat at night, [2]. ► The whole of the Copaiba seems to have been absorbed and to
have exercised its influence upon the skin, by which it is always more or less eliminated,
giving its odor to the perspiration, [12].

Authorities.
23, Dr. A.
Kennedy, Month. Hom. Rev., vol. xx, p. 479, 1876, J. McK., æt. twenty-two years, took the
oil for gonorrhœa; 24, F. Taylor, M.D., Guy’s Hosp.
Rep., 1876, p. 1, Weickart’s experiments, took 1 1/2 ounce of the Mistura
Copaibæ Resinæ, containing about 20 grains, three hours after a full meal; 25, ibid., took 3 ounces of mixture two hours after a full meal.►
The urine passed after forty-five minutes gave no
precipitate nor turbidity with Nitric acid, but some passed after one hour and twenty
minutes became opalescent on the addition of either Nitric or Acetic acid. The same reaction
occurred with that passed two hours after, but not with the next instalment, passed nine
hours after taking the drug, [24]. ► The urine passed after twenty, forty, and sixty minutes gave
no reaction, but a turbidity was produced in that passed one hour and twenty-five minutes
after the dose, and the precipitate was abundant in that discharged fifty minutes later.
Twelve hours after taking the medicine the urine became only faintly opalescent on the
addition of Nitric acid, and it was not further tested, [25].
► Three weeks ago contracted a first gonorrhœa, for
which he used injections of Sulphate of Zinc. These arrested the discharge for a time, but
it returned, and he began to take the oil of Copaiba. On may 19th he took two tablespoonfuls
of the pure oil, besides having taken one tablespoonful two or three days previously. After
each dose he was sick and vomited a little. On the 20th the discharge stopped; he had a
rigor, and noticed his face swollen and red. Went to business without taking food. On the
21st he had great thirst, nausea, vomiting, complete anorexia, restlessness, with increase
of swelling and redness of face. The arms and legs, and finally the body, became red and
swollen. When seen, May 22d, I found the whole body œdematous, face dusky yellowish-red
color; œdema, worst about eyelids, which could not be opened; some sticky discharge at
margins of eyelids; surface of skin of face and neck raised rather like measles. This is
more observable where the raised eruption terminates, next the hair and at lower parts of
neck: Over the body is a darkly-reddish smooth eruption, studded with innumerable points of
a deeper color scattered over the surface. The hands and feet somewhat resembled the face in
appearance. The throat is inflamed, of a dusky redness, with œdema of uvula; no difficulty
in swallowing. He complains of feeling very ill; he is sick and restless, and had no sleep,
but tossed about all night. No pain complained of; no difficulty with the urine, which is
rather dark in color, without deposit. Still intense thirst; tongue very foul,
yellowish-white thick fur; bowels not moved for two days. Morning temp. 104°; pulse 140,
small, thready. In the evening temp. 103°; pulse 130; stronger. Complains of his head going
round during day, and of slight sore throat; thirst less; has taken a little food; felt sick
and retched after it, but retained what he took; the penis œdematous; no pain in
micturition; bowels moved slightly; has taken 3j of brandy every two hours, [23].® 2000
